The exterior shows wear marks, edge wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. The top and bottom of the spine is slightly worn, with two small tears at the bottom left and right side of the front cover. The outside text block shows some wear, namely on the top. The hinge is slightly loose, but the binding remains firm. Pen written number on first page, which is worn on the right side and shows some tiny tears. Some pages show signs of have been bent at the bottom. Remaining interior with minor signs of wear. Good readable/working copy.; The book is protected with a clearcover, the clearcover is damaged, with some chips and tears throughout.; "George Lazarnick, produced a detailed study on the signatures of netsuke and inro artists, together with easily followed guidelines on how they may be read as well as illustrated notes on the calligraphic construction of the numerous Japanese characters involved. Over a period of several years, in addition to forming a collection of fine netsuke, Mr. Lazarnick has been amassing much detailed information on their carvers, searching out fine examples of their work throughout the world and recording the signatures in a systematic fashion. He has been aided in this work by his own natural gift for photography which, together with a large amount of painstaking research and help from other collectors and Oriental art dealers, has gone towards the production of this book. As George Lazarnick mentions in his introduction, one of the most difficult and brain-taxing aspects of reading and interpreting signatures is that the carved or engraved calligraphy used by the artists does not always follow the strict kanji or printed form of the characters represented. It is in this particular area that Mr. Lazarnick provides us with a wealth of useful information, together with many clear photographs of actual signatures. The majority of these have been enlarged so that the scholar may interpret the quirks and calligraphic mannerisms used by the artists in question with greater ease. As Mr. Lazarnick points out this is not another netsuke and inro book as such. He does not delve deeply into the biographies or artists, the styles of carving that they employed, or the materials that they used. He wisely feels that most of these aspects of the field have been covered and that he would shine a new light, from a different angle on this fascinating subject." excerpt from the foreword by Neil K. Davey, London, 1976.

English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.5 x 29 cm; 4.3 kg; 2 volumes with 1059 pages and over 5000 entries.; SCARCE REFERENCE BOOK ON NETSUKE.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jackets show edge wear, wear marks, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. The dust jacket spines on both volumes are faded, and the spine of volume II shows wear marks, namely slightly peeling off the laminated layer. The dust jacket of volume II shows a faded wear mark on the top left side of the front cover of ,and also minor wear marks at the top of the front cover. The dust jackets are protected with clear covers. Interior of both volumes is in very good condition with minor signs of wear. Good condition overall.; Since netsuke made their first appearance in Europe over 100 years ago, they have slowly but steadily been established among an enthusiastic circle of collectors as serious objects of art. These small sculptures range in size from 3 to 15 cm and display astonishing detail. Since the seventeenth century, they have served as a medium for artistic expression that comes as near to perfection as anything human hands could create. This publication represents the lifetime collection and study of netsuke by Frederick Meinertzhagen, one of the world's foremost authorities on netsuke. Meinertzhagen realized the need for a single source that would provide the necessary information for collectors to appreciate fully their unique qualities, but was unable to find a publisher willing to take on such an enormous task. Eventually, he indexed his entire collection; it is currently on display at the British Museum library, so that others might benefit from it. With the permission of the Museum, netsuke enthusiasm George Lazarnick photographed the entire Index for publication, thereby creating a source that successfully presents this wealthy of information to all serious collectors and dealers of netsuke. The Index consists of two volumes with over 5,000 entries that provide detailed information on individual netsuke. Perhaps the most exciting and helpful aspects of the Index are the marvelously accurate drawings of netsuke done by Meinertzhagen. The cards provide a hand drawn facsmile of the artist's signature, accurately recording the carver's original calligraphy and his kakihan. Historical backgrounds, critical commentaries, notes on various artists, and methods of collecting are included by Meinertzhagen on the cards, along with illustrations of some 100 unsigned netsuke. The book also includes photographs, correspondence, and personal insigns by those who knew Meinertzhagen, providing a complete detail of his life and work. This publication will serve as an authoritative and comprehensive reference guide for all serious collectors of netsuke and related arts. Distinguished collector Raymond Bushell notes, "George Lazarnick, with his great knowledge of netsuke and his professionalism in photography, makes the best of the Meinertzhagen Card Index available to collectors in the form in which (Meinertzhagen) wanted it. The book is a practical undertaking and a great service to collectors.".

Interior of both volumes with minor signs of wear, apart from volume one which shows the front free endpaper slightly glued to title page. The slipcase shows some wear marks, scuffs and scratches throughout with a small chip at the bottom. Good condition overall.; "The first logically organized approach to the problem of helping a collector identify an unknown signature was made in 1976 by Mr. Lazarnick when he wrote and assembled The Signature Book of Netsuke, Inro and Ojime Artists in Photographs. This was a methodically planned reference work containing and extraordinary amount of detailed information on these artists presented in such a manner that even a neophyte collector could soon learn how to read signatures and identify artists. This present book, Netsuke and Inro Artists and How to Read Their Signatures is an outgrowth of his first work but can only be compared in part since the information now included is far more comprehensive and better arranged, while the number of photographs reproduced is enormously greater. The material gathered by Mr. Lazarnick is staggering in its volume. For example he reproduces five and one-half times as many kahihan as the one hundred in Joly's Behrens Collections. He photographed netsuke, inro and their signatures and collected information from 23 museums, countless collectors, dealers and auction houses, and extracted material from just about all of the books on the subject in several languages including Japanese." excerpt from the foreword by C.V.S. Note: this is the cloth-bound edition, not the deluxe leather-bound edition. Gray buckram linen-like hardboards, with crisp black-stamped lettering and embossing all around. Unbumped spine head and tail, and sharp corners. Exceptionally clean bindings. Text blocks firmly bound in and quite tight. Lovely patterned endpapers/FEPs in a design suggestive of a map of Japan and its provinces. Vol. I with 840 numbered pages, Vol. II with 841-1376 numbered pages, all on coated stock. Both volumes with countless duotone photo images of various works of netsuke and inro and their signatures, as detailed below. The first volume also with 24 pages of full color plates exhibiting items from the collection of Verna and George Lazarnick. Immensely clean interiors. Both volumes with custom-fitted transparent plastic protective covers. Also included is the publisher's folding-paper pamphlet of instructions and promotions, the pamphlet in unblemished condition. A Near Fine set of two volumes. Either unread or very gently read. Scarce in any condition. It seems unlikely that a set exists in finer condition. 12 lbs. 7 oz. This two volume work was without doubt the most comprehensive, extremely well researched, study of its subject to be published by 1982. It will probably remain unsurpassed for all time. Included are 3839 photographs of subjects, 3946 photographs of signatures and inscriptions, and include the work of 2112 artists, many of whom are recorded here for the first time. In addition, 1151 characters are shown in their kaisho (printed) form, their sosho and gyosho (cursive) equivalents, with their readings and, where relevant, their meanings. With these are 5988 photographs of the same characters as they were formed by the artists themselves.
