Gaetano Amalfi (Piano di Sorrento 1855 Napoli 1928), magistrato, fu tra i maggiori studiosi di folklore campano nei decenni a cavallo dei due secoli in cui visse ed operò. Fu autore di un centinaio di pubblicazioni, ormai reperibili solo al mercato antiquario o nelle biblioteche, fatte salve quelle poche che hanno goduto di una ristampa. A queste si è ora aggiunta questa rara monografia, scritta nel 1892 ed introvabile finanche nella ben fornita Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli. Il testo, citato da Ernesto De Martino in uno dei suoi studi, fu composto sulla scia di un saggio simile, composto dal suo amico Giuseppe Pitré qualche anno prima, a proposito degli usi natalizi, matrimoniali e funerari del popolo siciliano. La peculiarità del lavoro dell'Amalfi consiste nell'aver raffrontato le sue osservazioni sugli usi e costumi degli abitanti di alcuni centri della provincia di Napoli con le numerose notizie disseminate nelle opere degli scrittori che trattarono, sia pure in contesti letterari, della città e della Campania. La profonda erudizione dell'autore, comunque, non è puramente accademica bensì strumento da lui utilizzato per i suoi studi etnografici. Per la citazione di opere e autori, non tutti noti ad un vasto pubblico (Basile, Cortese, Capasso e Imbriani, ma anche Correra, Corvo, Guiscardi, Lombardo, Pagano e altri), la ristampa è preceduta da ventotto brevi schede bio-bibliografiche, approntate da Rosario Di Bonito, curatore della ristampa e autore della Prefazione al testo.
