Los periódicos durante la Guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814) es de los trabajos llevados a cabo por Manuel Gómez Ímaz el más importante con diferencia en cuanto a calidad, extensión, originalidad y aportación. Fue preparado en vistas al primer centenario de la guerra y se recupera hoy en conmemoración al segundo centenario. Se trata de una obra que en su momento fue premiada en el concurso público de 1908 por la Biblioteca Nacional, y que se publicó a expensas del Estado en 1910. A pesar del tiempo transcurrido, sigue siendo hoy por hoy el instrumento más importante para conocer la prensa durante los sucesos ocurridos en España entre los años de 1808 y 1814. Para entender el auténtico valor de una obra de este género nos valdremos de aquellas palabras que pronunció el reconocido erudito Muñoz Romero y que en alguna ocasión recordó el propio Gómez Ímaz: «La utilidad de los trabajos bibliográficos la reconocen casi todos; pero las fatigas que cuestan sólo las saben las personas estudiosas y los que se dedican a investigaciones históricas y literarias. Así es que no es de extrañar que algunos ignorantes desprecien este género de libros, como si fuese posible levantar un edificio sin andamios y construirlos sin materiales». Manuel Gómez Ímaz (La Habana, 1842 - Sevilla, 1922). Historiador y erudito sevillano que formó parte del grupo de amigos reunidos en torno a Menéndez Pelayo y a la Sociedad de Bibliófilos Andaluces. Desde joven comenzó a colaborar con diferentes periódicos y revistas. Entre el legado que nos dejó se levanta como un monumento Los periódicos durante la Guerra de la Independencia (1910), pero fue también autor de muchos otros libros, entre los que cabe citar el Inventario de los cuadros sustraídos por el gobierno intruso en Sevilla el año de 1810 (1896), Sevilla en 1808 (1908) Artículos. Fruslerías históricas sevillanas (1ª serie) (1912) y Artículos. Fruslerías de antaño (2ª serie) (1918). Su pasión bibliográfica y bibliófila conocida más allá de los ambientes eruditos sevillano, le supuso el reconocimiento general del mundo de la cultura.
