Après avoir expliqué les principes de la doctrine de l'acide et l'alcali, sur laquelle il fonde son système, l'auteur tente de prouver que la chaleur des eaux provient de feux souterrains. Il croit par ailleurs que les eaux de Vichy sont imprégnées d'un même minéral, un alcali naturel. Son ouvrage fournit enfin d'importants renseignements sur les effets et les vertus des eaux, notamment contre le scorbut, l'épilepsie, l'asthme ou encore les maladies vénériennes.
