NOTE THAT SINCE THE BOOK WEIGHS OVER ONE POUND, THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES IF YOU REQUIRE PRIORITY MAIL OR LIVE OUTSIDE THE U.S. XX [From the dust jacket flaps] By the end of her life Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most widely loved women in the world. In this beautiful book the authors recreate?in text and in photographs?the warmth, the sincerity, the greatness, the energy, the shyness, and the wisdom of the person who became a universal symbol of the new role women were to assume in this century. Helen Gahagan Douglas, who knew Mrs. Roosevelt for more than twenty-three years, has captured the spirit of Eleanor Roosevelt and the mood of Americans?and people everywhere? who wish to remember her. In choosing the more than 150 photographs of Mrs. Roosevelt, Aaron Ezickson selected from thousands at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, the files of the Associated Press, and many other sources. The photographs, arranged in chronological order, show Mrs. Roosevelt from childhood to 1962: as a bride; with her family; in Albany as Governor's wife; in Washington as First Lady; traveling to American military bases during the Second World War; at the UN; with world leaders; among the poor, the sick, the desperate. The truly great photograph by Philippe Halsman that appears on the jacket and as a frontispiece has not heretofore been published. The captions for each photograph, tributes by Adlai Stevenson, U Thant, and other world leaders, add an important dimension to this book. [About the author] Eleanor Roosevelt had a profound influence on the life of Helen Gahagan Douglas. They were friends for more than twenty-three years. In the late 1930's Mrs. Douglas's efforts on behalf of migrant farm workers brought her to the attention of Mrs. Roosevelt. In order to support President Roosevelt's administration, Mrs. Douglas entered politics in California in 1940 as National Committeewoman and State Vice-Chairman. It was at the President's request that she ran for Congress, where she served as Representative from California from 1946 to 1951. In 1946 Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. Douglas were appointed by President Truman as members of the United States delegation to the First Assembly of the United Nations. Mrs. Douglas served there on the Financial and Economic Committee with Adlai E. Stevenson. Eleanor Roosevelt campaigned for Mrs. Douglas in her race for the Senate in 1950. They served together on the National Advisory Committee on Farm Labor from its founding in 1958. Mrs. Douglas visited Mrs. Roosevelt frequently at the White House, and later at Hyde Park, and at her home in New York City. Mrs. Douglas lives in New York with her husband, Melvyn Douglas.
