Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Ottie's eight children survive in a world where bootlegging, moon shining, theft, and murder are disturbingly believable. Ottie's neglect of her children is heart-wrenching and the will of her children to survive and achieve is inspiring. The story is set in post-World War II Golden Valley, North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia and the drama unfolds until each of Ottie's children has reached adulthood. One of the eight children, Fred, is the primary narrator of this heart-touching story. Through his eyes we see the inner soul and feel the pain of a small child who craved a mother's love, yet seldom even had as much as a cold meal prepared before he went to school. Through his eyes we see a son who also wanted a father's love, yet he never had that father even claim him as a son. It is an inspiring story of self-forgiveness and redemption. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. DON'T LET THE GREEN WAVE DROWN YOU is a book about Glen Alpine High School and my classmates and friends who attended the school from 1952-1961. Some of us knew each other well and some of us hardly knew each other at all. I regret that we did not take the time to get to know and respect each other more. Perhaps the stories in this book are memories that we hold in common. DON'T LET THE GREEN WAVE DROWN YOU honors my neighbors in the Mt. Olive Church community who experienced the tough years of the last century. We lived the Eisenhower years, the beginning of Elvis Presley's career, hula hoops, poodle skirts, and the joy of rock-and-roll. A few families had money and means, most did not. Some students came to school malnourished and hungry. Others wore cast-off clothing or hand-me-downs from brothers and sisters. At times, students borrowed writing paper and pencil from friends, because they had none of their own. Yet, they made no excuses, behaved, and applied themselves to learning the curriculum. I can only speak of my own experiences. I lived in the countryside near the McDowell County line. Those who lived in Glen Alpine or near Morganton had different experiences. My book is narrow in scope for this reason. I depended heavily on classmate input to write some stories. My book is a validation of the history of our community and school. I have attempted to affirm the truth of what happened. Sometimes I wrote of the beautiful. At other times, I was unable to avoid the ugliness of life. My stories are based on factual experiences. I used real names when individuals gave me permission. At other times, I used a substitute name. In some cases, I chose to conceal both identity and event by weaving an enhanced story around them. I wanted my book to be an affirmation of my classmates and community, so I chose to avoid direct criticism. It is my desire to continue preserving North Carolina history. Writing is an effort on my part to practice self-forgiveness of my own faults and the events of life that caused me pain. I want to cast a net of love and compassion across the years. I am drawing a circle of love to include all of you. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A TAR HEEL MARCHES is set against the backdrop of the beginning civil rights movement of the 1960s. It is the true story of a man named, Fred, who struggles to leave the poverty of his Appalachian Mountains to make a new life for himself. In Part I, the author explains how he made the journey to Berea College without financial or emotional support from his family. At Berea, he befriended black students and, through his associations with them, he came to know and experience discrimination and abuse that they had known all their lives. He paints a vivid picture, sometimes hilarious, other times tragic, of life on the Berea campus from 1961-65. In Part II, the author discusses the struggles of students to get permission to go to Montgomery, and then he gives a personal testimony of what it was like to be a part of one of the largest civil rights marches in the history of the country. Chapter by chapter, the reader travels with the Berea group on the journey southward. Step by step, the author takes you on the long march through the streets of Montgomery. This book is a story of hope, justice, and equality. It champions the triumph of the human will to define itself and live in the power of belief that "God Hath Made of One Blood All Peoples of the Earth." This item is printed on demand.
