Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). In English. Signed and inscribed in Norwegian by the publisher and consultant (and force behind the book) Abel Abrahamsen. My effort to Google Translate was only partially successful due to my unfamiliarity with the language and slight difficulty with his handwriting. I did manage to extract the words 'finally been completed these days' and 'enjoy useful pleasure in reading.' Also 'warm greetings'. From an article written in 2005 titled "Mr. Norway" by a Joyce Brooks (Abel Abrahamsen passed away in 2018 at the age of 95) : 'Abel is probably best known to New Yorkers for the fabulous Norsk store which he opened on 57TH Street and Park Avenue. The store was a unique combination of elegant and affordable Norwegian furniture and gifts. Due to his award winning taste combined with a charismatic personality, he affectionately became known as "Mr. Norway." Although the store no longer exists Abel remains active in promoting Norwegian --American business and culture. Abel, who is 82 years young is constantly finding new projects. Recently Abel published a book called Jewish Life and Culture in Norway ? "Wergeland?s Legacy". One of the fascinating aspects of this book is that the poet Henrik Wergeland, who was born in Kristiansand in1808 was not Jewish. His original plan was to become a minister, however because of his literary and political activity, the Government refused to assign him to a church. He became very concerned with the situation of the Jews in Europe and due to his diligence the "Jewish clause" which in the 1814 Norwegian Constitution prohibited Jews from entering Norway was repealed by the parliament in 1851. All of his works were characterized by a concern for human rights a term he used more than 100 years before the United Nations adopted its Declaration of Human Rights. Abel?s book is based on the stories and photos of a 2003 exhibition at Scandinavia House New York, which Abel had brought over from Norway and then toured museums, libraries and other institutions in the U.S. and Canada. The book is a continuation of the exhibition and is dedicated to all those who resisted anti-semitism and racism, injustice and intolerance, as well as the equivalent evil of indifference.' As you can see from the photos, the covers of the book are exceptionally clean. There isn't much wear, just a few light bumps. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, nicely tight pages, no binding issues The inside covers and end papers are a mustard color. They are perfectly clean and unworn. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any creasing or dogeared corners. The pages are very clean. I saw only a few speck-sized spots and one fingerprint off an edge. The margins have light toning. There are great many old photographs, all in excellent shape. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of Mr. Abrahamsen's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I haven't seen a copy of this book for sale with a reference to a dust jacket, so it seems very likely that it was published without one. Inscribed by Author(s).

Folio. Disbound. 4 pp. Contains announcements of newly-published "Dances and Minuets for the Year ensuing; Vocal Music, &c.; Psalmodia Evangelica; New Editions of the following Music; New Editions of Instruction Books and Pocket Companions for the following Instruments," and announcements of publications forthcoming in December. Slightly worn and browned; outer edge slightly chipped; leaves loose; binder's holes and chipping to inner margins with minor paper loss. "Peter Thompson was the founder of the important business carried on by the Thompson family for half a century. They were the last survivors of the music trade which once thronged St. Paul's Church Yard, and their place of business had very likely been one of the shops held by members of the trade a century or more previously . In 1780, Peter . a grandson of the original founder, is added to the firm, which now stands as Samuel, Ann & Peter, and the business prospers still more." Kidson: British Music Publishers, Printers, and Engravers, pp. 125-26.
