So bezeichnete der damalige US -Präsident Ronald Reagan die Auseinandersetzung als einen nicht nachvollziehbaren 'dispute over the sovereignty of that little ice-cold bunch of land down there' zwischen zwei Alliierten im Kampf gegen den Kommunismus, sollte den Briten aber schließlich doch die Unterstützung der Vereinigten Staaten zusichern. In der Tat ist auch heute, rund 25 Jahre später, noch die Frage, warum 236 britische und 700 argentinische Soldaten für die vermeintlich unbedeutenden Inseln kurz vor der Antarktis (die zum damaligen Zeitpunkt 1.800 Menschen und 60.000 Schafe beheimateten) sterben mussten, ein vieldiskutiertes Thema. So erscheinen Erklärungsversuche für die Auseinandersetzung anhand der 'klassischen' Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen äußerst problematisch und unzureichend.
