Paperback. Condición: New. 156 About The Book -: The study of the Indian craftsman raises questions of the widest and deepest interest, questions that will not only give consciousness to modern Eastern thought but help us with some of the most advanced of our Western problems. He tells us of a condition of life among the eastern Aryans that still exists, and he tells it in such a way as to make us feel that there is no reason why it should not go on existing. If we examine our own Western economic history, more particularly the history of England, we find that the breakup of the conditions of English craftsmanship and the English village order, cannot be traced back beyond the industrial revolution of the 18th century, and the enclosure of the common lands that accompanied it. Fundamentally, with us, the great change came with the introduction of industrial machinery, and the question which forces itself upon us, when we look at the picture. About The Author -: Ananda K. Coomaraswamy ( Ananda Kentish Muthu Coomaraswamy 1877 ? 1947) was a Ceylonese Tamil metaphysician, pioneering historian and philosopher of Indian art who was an early interpreter of Indian culture to the West. Paperback. Condición: New. 139 About the book:- The present work is an analysis of Buddhist symbolism in historical perspective. In author's view Buddhist symbolism, in art or religion, is but a part of the main current of Indian religion and art and has to be studied in that context. Early Indian art is, thus, essentially the continuation of a mainly aniconic Vedic style and the compositions are comprehensible only with reference to Vedic notions. The present work studies the fundamental elements of Buddhist symbolism which predominate in the early an iconic art and are never dispensed with in the later imagery, though they are subordinated to the human icon. The present study is divided into two parts: in Part 1, the Tree of Life, Earth-Lotus and World-Wheel (and other cognate symbols) have been analyzed; Part II deals with the place of the lotus-throne. A study of these reveals that they represent a universal Indian symbolism and set of theological concepts. About the Author:-Ananda Kentish Muthu Coomaraswamy (1877 ? 1947) was a Sri Lankan Tamil metaphysician, pioneering historian and philosopher of Indian art who was an early interpreter of Indian culture to the West. He was born in Colombo, British Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, to the Ceylonese Tamil legislator and philosopher Sir Muthu Coomaraswamy of the Ponnambalam Coomaraswamy family and his English wife Elizabeth Beeby. His father died when Ananda was two years old, and Ananda spent much of his childhood and education abroad. Coomaraswamy made important contributions to the philosophy of art, literature, and religion. In Ceylon, he applied the lessons of William Morris to Ceylonese culture and, with his wife Ethel, produced a groundbreaking study of Ceylonese crafts and culture. While in India, he was part of the literary circle around Rabindranath Tagore, and he contributed to the "Swadeshi" movement, an early phase of the struggle for Indian independence. Paperback. Condición: New. 243 About The Book -: This book tells about the Indian craftsman conceives of his art, not as the accumulated skill of ages, but as originating in the divine skill of Vishwakarma and revealed by him , wrote Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy, in his book The Indian Craftsman. For the traditional Indian craftsman, crafts and worship have a symbiotic relationship. Vishwakarma is both God and man, the divine architect of the Gods and the God of craftsmen, worshipped by all the artisanal communities, across the country. He is both signifier and signified. Vishwakarma is the sum total of consciousness, the group soul of individual craftsmen of all times and places and simultaneously a community of craftsmen living their everyday lives crafting icons and building monumental structures, while struggling to eke out a living as artisans. This volume on the conception and perceived realities of the Vishwakarma seeks to explore the hermeneutics of Vishwakarma and to document a rich tapestry of images as well as historical information regarding crafts and craftsmen through the ages. Paperback. Condición: New. 49 About the book:-The Rigveda or Rig Veda is an ancient Indian collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns. It is one of the four sacred canonical texts (?ruti) of Hinduism known as the Vedas. It is the oldest known Vedic Sanskrit text. In the Rg Veda, the Five Aryan kindreds are spoken of as immigrants; they have come from another place across the waters, and have settled and tilled the lands on the hither shore. This process of land-taking has generally been interpreted as referring to an historical immigration of an Aryan speaking people who, fair in colour and sharply distinguished from the dusky pagan Dasyus, crossed the Sarasvati in the Panjab and made their home in Bharatavarsa. That is a euhemeristic interpretation of a traditional literature which is strictly speaking devoid of any historical content whatever. We do not mean to say by this that there may not have taken place historical events analogous to those alluded to in the Vedic "myths" ; on the contrary, we assume that history is always enacted in the pattern of the ultimate reality enunciated in the metaphysical tradition, or in Biblical phraseology, "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets. " In this sense, for example, we may be sure that the people who performed the Vedic ritual and chanted the mantras in their recorded form, actually possessed horses and chariots, had experience of the crossing of seas and rivers, and tilled the soil. The book is the product of extensive study of this subject which generates a good amount of interest among the readers. Paperback. Condición: New. 236 About The Book: These essays delve into the essence of India's national movement, highlighting its idealistic nature. They stress that beyond the visible aspects of this struggle, its deeper significance often eludes both India and England. Understanding this depth is vital to generate genuine empathy for India's battle against foreign domination. It's not just a political conflict; it represents a quest for spiritual and intellectual freedom from foreign influences. Purely political and economic victories fall short; real freedom must transcend material gains. These essays argue that nations are shaped more by art and poetry than by trade and politics. Art embodies the essence of life, which India seeks to realize through self-sacrifice and self-discovery, ultimately giving rise to a spiritually endorsed nationalism. Additionally, the essays underscore the power of art to revitalize India, both spiritually and materially. The decline in artistic comprehension among modern Indians correlates with the nation's inefficiency and poverty. Contrasting this with Japan, where national art contributes to strength, highlights the pivotal role of art in a nation's well-being. Furthermore, the author delves into various subjects, ranging from the profound importance of the Indian Nationality struggle to reflections on the continued significance of Gramophones in society. Hardcover. Hardcover.
