From the Introduction: The Belles Heures, from which the ex libris and thirty-two illuminations are here reproduced in facsimile, is one of the celebrated Books of Hours created in the second decade of the fifteenth century for Jean, Duke of Berry, prince of France (1340-1416). Like the well-known Tres Riches Heures also made for the duke and now in the Musee Conde in Chantilly, it is a rich compendium of brilliant small paintings and ranks among the great masterpieces of the Middle Ages. Please find then: The Belles Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry Prince of France, with an Introduction by James J. Rorimer Director of the Cloisters and a Description of the Plates by Margaret B. Freeman Curator of the Cloisters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York dated 1958 and a First Edition with the same dated in the title and copyright pages. The book finishes with the 32 full-color illuminated pages described by Ms. Freeman, each a treasure unto itself. This medium sized hard cover book is contained in a specially made slipcase (7 x 10 inches) papered in green with decorative title labels. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The slipcase is darkened from handling and general exposure and has some wear on the edges of the opening and lower corners (please be sure to see the photos). The hard covers of the book simulated vellum with some intentional mottling, are also showing some exposure to humidity but nothing extreme. There is also a narrow band of wear on the front cover and some darkening where the past-down endpapers meet the boards. Similarly, both endpapers show some toning from the acid of the binding glues along the hinges. There is an inked gift inscription on the front endpaper but this is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and especially the illuminated plates are clean and bright and handsome throughout.
