Calsabigi frequently collaborated with Christoph Gluck on his 'reform' operas; together they penned numerous works, including Orfeo ed Eurydice (present here). Included in this edition is a partial translation of Milton's Paradise Lost with text in English and Italian, and The Anthem by Thomson. Chip to front spine joint; boards lightly soiled, else a clean copy overall with light foxing internally, but about VG overall. OCLC locates just seven titles by Casalbigi, all of which are 19th century editions or later, and no copies of this title.

Al frontespizio timbretto «De Breme»: Ludovico Giuseppe Arborio Gattinara conte di Sartirana marchese di Breme (Parigi 1754 - Milano 1828) svolse importantissimi incarichi diplomatici a Napoli, dove dal 1782 fu rappresentante del re di Sardegna, a Vienna e infine a Milano: qui, per volontà dello stesso Napoleone, divenne ministro degli Interni del Regno Italico tra il 1806 e il 1809. Fu padre del celebre letterato Ludovico di Breme. Lo scambio tra Calzabigi e Alfieri, pubblicato per la prima volta nella presente edizione e considerato uno dei più importanti documenti sul teatro italiano di fine Settecento, per la sua rilevanza venne più volte ristampato come prefazione alle Tragedie dell'astigiano. «Dopo aver sottolineato le cause della mancanza di lavori teatrali di genere tragico in Italia, [Calzabigi] fece una precisa analisi critica dei personaggi creati dall' Alfieri, dei quali sottolineava l'originalità pur facendo qualche riserva circa lo stile delle tragedie. L'Alfieri accettò serenamente le critiche, definendo l'analisi del C. "giudiziosa, ragionata e cortese" (C. Gabanizza, Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, vol. 17, 1974). Mariana, com a data de 1784. Único volume publicado. Muito raro. Inocêncio não refere a obra e o nome do tradutor. Só existem dois exemplares catalogados em Portugal, na BNP e na Academia das Ciências. Muito importante para o estudo da divulgação e influência da obra de Mestastasio em Portugal. As páginas preliminares sem numeração apresentam a dedicatória à Infanta D. Mariana e a prefação do autor, as páginas preliminares com numeração romana, contêm uma extensa dissertação de Rainieri de? Calsabigi, com extensas citações de poesias de Metastasio no original italiano. Este volume contém os três dramas: Artaxerxes, Adriano na Síria e Demétrio. As três páginas finais sem numeração incluem o índice, um aviso declarando que as versões traduzidas, são as últimas revistas pelo autor, e as erratas. Infanta D. Mariana Vitória de Bragança (Palácio de Queluz, 1768 - Madrid, 1788) Filha da Rainha D.Maria I e do Rei D, Pedro III, casou com o Infante Gabriel, de Espanha, filho do rei Carlos III de Espanha, em 23 de Maio de 1785. Morreu de varíola quase ao mesmo tempo que o seu marido, tendo sobrevivido um filho dos três que o casal teve e que é o antepassado dos actuais Duques de Marchena, Durcal, Hernani e Ansola. José Lúcio da Costa (Lisboa, 1763 - 1820?) entrou para a Academia de S. Lucas, em 4 de Junho de 1781. Foi um importante gravador de Buril, autor de uma extensa obra. A data de falecimento é incerta e pode ser que só tenha falecido em 1820. Pietro Mestastasio (Roma, 1698 - Viena, 1782) Poeta italiano e escritor, que se destinguiu especialmente como libretista, tendo os seus libretos de ópera sido postos em música numerosas vezes pelos maiores compositores do seu tempo. Foi poeta da Corte Imperial de Viena, desde 1729. De seu nome completo Antonio Domenico Bonaventura Trapassi. Publicou as suas primeiras poesias em 1717 e o seu primeiro libreto, Didone Abbandonata, foi posto em música, em 1724, pelo compositor Domenico Sarro. Os seus libretos foram postos em música mais de oitocentas vezes durante o século XVIII. É autor de cerca de 61 libretos para óperas, 8 para oratórias e várias dezenas para cantatas, além de numerosas poesias líricas. Ranieri de" Calzabigi (Livorno, 1714 - Nápoles, 1795) Poeta e libretista, que fez uma das mais completas edições dos libretos de Mestatasio. Ele próprio ficou famoso pelos seus libretos para as óperas do compositor Christoph Willibald Gluck, entre elas Orfeo ed Euridice, 1762, Alceste, 1767 e Paride ed Elena, 1770. 15x10.5 cm. Single published volume. Very rare. Inocêncio does not mention the work or the name of the translator. There are only two copies catalogued in Portugal, at the BNP and the Academy of Sciences. Very important for the study of the dissemination and influence of Mestastasio"s work in Portugal. The unnumbered preliminary pages contain the dedication to princess Mariana and the author"s preface, while the preliminary pages with Roman numerals contain an extensive dissertation by Rainieri de" Calsabigi, with extensive quotations from Metastasio"s poems in the original Italian. This volume contains the three dramas: Artaxerxes, Adrian in Syria and Demetrius . The three final unnumbered pages include the index, a notice stating that the translated versions are the latest revised by the author, and the errata. Princess Mariana Vitória de Bragança (Queluz Palace, 1768 - Madrid, 1788). Daughter of Queen Maria I and King Pedro III, she married Prince Gabriel of Spain, son of King Carlos III of Spain, on 23 May 1785. She died of smallpox at almost the same time as her husband, leaving behind one of the couple"s three children, who is the ancestor of the current Dukes of Marchena, Durcal, Hernani and Ansola. José Lúcio da Costa (Lisbon, 1763 - 1820?) joined the Academy of St. Luke on 4 June 1781. He was an important engraver, author of an extensive body of work.
