Añadir al carrito8vo (104 x 156). 12 pp., front cover included in pagination. With folding map of Palestine (scale 1:1,000,000). Original printed wrappers. Stapled. Scarce, confidential British Army briefing on the political situation in Mandate Palestine in the immediate aftermath of WWII, with "Restricted" warning on title-page. Includes a map of Palestine, dated 29 September 1945, indicating predominantly Jewish-owned land as well as major towns, roads, railways and rivers. - The pamphlet briefly addresses the history of Palestine, Zionism and British promises made during WWI, the establishment of the Mandate, the Arab rebellion of 1936, the 1939 White Paper and the Biltmore Programme, concluding with an outline of the situation in 1945. The foreword by General Sir Bernard Paget urges officers to read the booklet in order to understand "the problem of Palestine, for without such knowledge you will not appreciate the difficulties which confront us in that country, and why you are here". - A single copy in research libraries recorded on OCLC, at the University of Chicago; several microfiche copies in other libraries internationally. - Some rust spots near stapling, otherwise in fine condition. - OCLC 4411877.

Añadir al carrito8vo (145 x 210 mm). 48 original silver-gelatin prints, 37 of which captioned in ink. Inserted into window mounts (55 x 80 mm). An additional 21 photographs loosely inserted (9 captioned), 5 of which are from commercial studios. Contemporary giltstamped olive cloth. Photograph album compiled by a British soldier serving in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of the First World War, including rare images of Deir Dibwan, an Arab Palestinian village (now city) four miles east of Ramallah. The album features native men and women, dwellings, olive groves, camel convoys, markets and roadwork, showing the village and its surroundings piror to the drastic changes it faced after the Mandate period, coming under Jordanian rule after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, followed by Israeli occupation in the wake of the Six-Day War of 1967. - Further images show Bethlehem, Abbassia, the interior of the Sultan Hassan Mosque, the Pyramids, the Delta Barrage, the statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps in Port Said, Alexandria port, and Giza zoo, along with British ships (HMS Superb and SS Caledonia) and steam trains. The loosely inserted pictures include images of the German colony at Haifa, the British camp in Alexandria, antique ruins in Jericho and Ramleh, the Nile and the Suez Canal. - Though the bulk of the photographs is not dated, one picture of Luna Park in Heliopolis shows the first amusement park in the Middle East still operating, suggesting that the owner of the album was based in Egypt as early as 1914/15. The image shows the main attraction, the water slide, before the basin was drained and floored when Luna Park was converted into a military hospital in 1915. Two of the loosely inserted snapshots are dated 1917, displaying a tank deployed in the Second Battle of Gaza (17-19 April) and a group portrait of British troops in Jerusalem on the 9th of December. - A unique find. - A few photos faded but generally good, evenly toned prints. Spine sunned, light wear to extremities, binding a little loose but holding firmly, otherwise very good.

Añadir al carritoFolio (205 x 330 mm). 152, (6) pp. on ruled notebook paper. Followed by 104 blank pages. In blue pen with red underlinings of headlines and most important terms. With 2 hand-drawn maps of Palestine and India. Contemporary half cloth over papered boards. Manuscript lecture notes of a British Army officer from the interwar period: a fine example of education in theoretical warfare. Particularly interesting for the descriptions of historical battles used as examples when teaching tactics and strategy, including not only early operations such as the 1704 Battle of Blenheim during the War of the Spanish Succession and the 1806 Battle of Jena against Napoleon, but also recent campaigns like 'Operation Michael', conducted by the German general Erich Ludendorff against Allied Forces on the Western front near Cambrai in March 1918, or the British Palestine Campaign and the movements of General Edmund Allenby towards the end of World War I: "Within 4 days whole of 2nd Turkish Army had been destroyed & Haifa captured" (p. 18). The subject matter of these lecture notes indicates a great deal of self-awareness among the British Army, reflecting on their own campaigns, victories and defeats. A section captioned "Lessons from the War" illustrates this critical mindset, not least acknowledging the difficulties posed to military administration in British India due to "the enormous distances to be traversed, and the lack of good communications" (p. 142). - The book further includes a history of the British War Office, the Territorial Force, and the Indian Army, along with notes on the administration of a railway and the role of the Royal Air Force, stressing that "in future wars command of the air will be essential to success, because victory will go to that power" (p. 26). - Prepared by Lt. John Leese of the Second North Staffordshire Regiment, with his ownership to upper cover. Several loosely inserted handouts and newspaper clippings place the otherwise not dated manuscript in the early 1920s. An original group photograph showing the instructional staff of the Machine Gun Training Centre at Grantham in 1916 is loosely inserted. A major in the Machine Gun Corps during World War I, Leese probably received his training there. - Binding somewhat worn, interior very well preserved. Inserted handouts worn around edges.

Añadir al carritoFolio (260 x 360 mm). (153) ff. With 136 original black-and-white photographs, 10 picture postcards (6 of the Berlin Olympic stadium), 2 souvenir packs of photographs of Corfu (12 each), a pack of 15 photographs of Arnhem, 1 ALS (10 pp.), a large quantity of newspaper clippings, several telegrams, Red Cross certificates, booklets, brochures, menus and Christmas cards. Contemporary blindstamped half calf over cloth boards with 4 cloth straps. A trove of photographs and ephemera, collected and assembled as an annotated scrapbook by two brothers serving in the British Army and Royal Navy. Particularly interesting for the rare images of Jewish refugee ships off the Palestinian coast, along with material relating to the 1946 Corfu Channel incident, considered an early episode of the Cold War. - The first section of the book reflects the army career of Stephen Charles De Lancey Aitchison, comprising impressive photographs of his training at Sandhurst, along with numerous newspaper clippings about allied advances on German territory, including news reports on Operation Queen against the Siegfried Line and the battle of Geilenkirchen in November 1944. - The second part illustrates Lennox Gordon Fraser Aitchison's career in the Royal Navy from March 1944 to June 1947, mainly serving as Able Seaman Printer aboard HMS Mauritius, one of the ships actively involved in the second Corfu Channel incident. Records relating to this historic event include 9 original photographs showing the "Saumarez" and "Volage" destroyers striking mines, and the "Leander" towing both of them, a sketch locating the explosions, and a letter from Lennox to his brother giving a lively eye-witness report: "Saumarez was first opened up on by Small Arms from the Albanian Coast, and 2 minutes later was obscured by fire following a terrific explosion". Among other notable photographs appear 7 rare images of illegal Jewish refugee sailing ships "crowded out with humanity" encountered off the coast of Mandate Palestine near Haifa, along with various charming views of Trieste, Malta, Nice, Nafplio, and Corfu. - A loosely inserted first edition of "The Two Types", a popular cartoon about two battle-hardened British officers prepared by William John Jones (pseud. "Jon") for the British Army Newspaper Unit, as well as some certificates from the Red Cross for Lady Shena Lennox Aitchison top off this exceptional collection. - Extremities somewhat rubbed. Occasional spotting; some photographs a little curled. A unique survival.

Añadir al carrito8vo. (2), 10 pp. With one folding plan. Scarce account of the 1943 battle at "Banana Ridge" in Tunisia, involving the German operation "Fliederblüte" (Lilac Blossom), a spoiling attack against British positions. In the early hours of 21 April, the Germans attacked "Banana Ridge" about 8 km to the east of Medjez el Bab on the Medjerde river. However, British intelligence had learned of the plan, and suitable preparations had therefore been made to receive the attack, but nonetheless there was sharp fighting, and some danger to British artillery before the German attack was beaten off after suffering more than 300 casualties. - The present report gives a detailed description of the British response to the German attack, acknowledging that "during the battle, each hour was so packed with incident, each unit faced with so many trials that a coherent description of the sequence of events is almost impossible". Curiously, it claims that many German soldiers readily surrendered without putting up much of a fight: "It appeared that the men of the Division Hermann Goering needed little persuasion to convince them that England was an infinitely better place than Germany" (p. 7). - The plan of Banana Ridge shows the British positions and the First Division Headquarters as well as nearby streets and the Medjez railway station. - Contemporary ownership to front cover ("A. Riley"). Some marginal tears; a little creased. Perforated. Intended for private circulation only, a circumstance adding to the work's rarity. No library copies traceable; a single copy is held at the Imperial War Museum.
