La puntuale disamina del Bianchetti esula dal mero àmbito statunitense per abbracciare invece la totalità dei territori e delle culture in cui, sul finire dell'Ottocento, la schiavitù era ancora vigente. L'opera venne premiata al Concorso Internazionale Antischiavista di Parigi, indetto dal Cardinale Lavigerie, e suscitò larga eco europea per la condanna senza appello che essa muoveva allo schiavismo. Il Bianchetti (1846-1922), noto principalmente per il presente libro, ricoprì la carica di avvocato consulente per l'Unione Cattolica Operaia dal 1880 al 1892.
