Las Casas, the first great historian of the New World, arrived in Cuba in 1502 and spent most of the ensuing years in the Caribbean and Mexico until his return to Spain in 1547. An early critic of Spanish policy, he nonetheless rose to be Bishop of Chiapas. He witnessed firsthand the appalling destruction of the American Indian population at the hands of the Spanish, something he continually fought against as a priest. After his return to Spain and throughout his old age, he launched a series of attacks on Spanish policy towards American Indians. The first and most influential of these tracts is BREVISSIMA RELACION DE LA DESTRUYCION DE LAS INDIAS, which describes the numerous wrongs inflicted upon the Indians, mainly in the Antilles. Written in 1539, it was first published in Seville in 1552, and editions in French, English, and German appeared before 1600. The present work is one of two French editions printed in 1582, following the initial 1579 Antwerp publication of this French translation by Jacques Miggrode. As with many later editions published outside Spain, this printing helped promote Protestant attacks on the Spanish Crown, perpetuating the "Black Legend" of Spanish destruction of the Indians. Crucial are the prefaces and letters to the reader by Marco Gimanni printer of all four and translator of three which shed light on the understanding of the Spanish conquests. Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566) was among the most influential figures in the definition of juridical and social principles for the Spanish colonisation of the Americas. One of the earliest settlers, he freed his native slaves in 1515, later defending their rights in front of the Emperor Charles V. In the 1520s, he joined the Dominican order and acted as a missionary for several years. He was the first to be appointed to the office of Protector of the Indios , responsible for the well-being of the natives in the colonies. Istoria first appeared, in the original Castilian of 1552 and the Italian translation by Giacomo Castellani, in 1626. The work is a harsh catalogue of the evils enacted by the Spaniards, divided chronologically by region. Las Casas portrayed a war of civilisations, inverting the traditional stance, in which the barbarian Spaniards were the perpetrators of cruelties against the gentle, sophisticated natives, with the Spanish government presented as a tyranny who should consider how its crown conquered what is called the New World . In the preface, Gimanni calls it the most tragic and most horrible history, which by human eyes, in the great theatre of the world, was ever seen. It shall certainly move those whose heart is not harder than stone . This sammelband features both the first edition of Il supplice schiavo (1636), and the second of 1640, with a slightly different title. Addressed to Charles V, it was a manifesto against encomienda , i.e., the Spanish settlers practice, authorised by the Crown, of exacting tributes and forced labour from the natives. It made fundamental contributions to the development of a canon law seeking to keep separate the reasons of the evangelisation of new peoples and those of the state , and to reflections on the natural right of the natives and the necessity to balance evangelisation and human dignity (Dalla Torre, 9-10). The fourth work is the first edition of Conquista delle Indie Occidentali , which includes the Spanish and Italian text of Las Casas s Disputa, controuersia (1552) and Principia ad defendendam iusticiam Yndorum (n.d.). It translates for the first time the summary of the Valladolid controversy, reported by Domingo de Soto, with Las Casas s arguments in defence of the natives and the objections of Sepulveda, imperial chronicler, with Las Casas s replies. The first part is an abridged version of Oorsprong en voortgang der Nederlandtscher beroerten (Origin and progress of the disturbances in the Netherlands) by Johannes Gysius (died 1652), first published anonymously in 1616. The second part is a translation of Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias (A short account of the destruction of the Indies), written by Bartolomé de las Casas (1474 1566) in 1542 and first published in 1552. Gysius was a minister, whose book is a history of the Dutch revolt against Spain in 1555 98, containing accounts of such events as the sieges of Haarlem, Leiden, and other cities and the execution by the Spanish of Count Egmont in Brussels in 1568. Las Casas was reprinted in 1620 and 1630. The first of these editions appeared in Amsterdam without any prefatory matter, not even the author s, relying largely on copperplates to tell a pictorial story of torture and cruelty on the title page and throughout the text. The publisher, Jan Evertz Cloppenburg, presented a typology of Spanish cruelty. He included two title pages set up in identical ways with the same pictures. The first was on the Low countries and the second was about the New World and preceded Las Casas account. The first title page included writing surrounded by pictures of men, women and children being tortured. Philip of Spain presided at the top and centre above the title, his vassals Don Jan and the Duke of Alva are shown facing the title: the Spanish cruelty in the Netherlands was mirroring that in the New World. This symbolic correspondence was a central typology of the Old World and New. Cloppenburg was asking the readers to see the Old World through the New. Here the publisher says that the Spaniards brought war and tyranny to the Low countries under the same religious pretext that they used to tyrannise the Natives in the New World a hundred years before. The heretics and the Lutherans in the Netherlands had taken the place of the pagans an Idolaters of the New World. In some of the engravings in Cloppenburg s edition, the inhabitants of the Netherlands are naked like the Natives. The translation, which is from the Dutch, sometimes elaborates beyond Las Casas original to make the Spaniards seem even crueler. The engravings of the Flemish artist Theodore de Bry, which had been in the Frankfurt Latin edition of Las Casas in 1598, constituted part of this edition, where they reinforced visually the worst atrocities in the text. An early abridged illustrated Dutch edition of these popular works, propaganda against the Spaniards, the second Cloppenburch edition (first in 1620), with altogether thirty-seven engraved plates. Cloppenburch (Jan Evertszoon; 1571-1648), the Amsterdam publisher of patriotic and religious books and tracts associated with the Dutch Reformed Church, released these works together with separate title pages and pagination. The title pages are illustrated with a portrait of Philip of Spain, his vassals, "Don Jan" and "Duc d'Alve", surrounded by pictures of children, women, and men being tortured, alluding to the cruelty of the Spaniards in the Americas and the Netherlands. The illustrations of the first book, an abridged translation of Bartolomé de las Casas' La Brevísima relación (1552), were made after Theodore de Bry's (for the 1598 Frankfurt Latin edition), and the plates were re-carved since the 1620 first edition. Las Casas was the first great historian of the New World and famously argued the humanity of indigenous Americans and African slaves in the Valladolid debate of 1550-1551, against the counter-arguments of Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda. While a boy in 1493, he witnessed the return to Seville of Christopher Columbus after his first voyage, and later the same year Las Casas father Pedro and several of his uncles embarked for the New World as members of Columbus second expedition. With his father, Las Casas emigrated to the island of Hispaniola in 1502 under Nicolás de Ovando, and witnessed the brutalities committed against the Tainos. He played a significant historical role as an eyewitness to one of the most important eras in history as he made an abstract and copy of the diary Christopher Columbus kept of his voyages and incorporated much of Columbus writings, diary and log in his own history. Today, both the Columbus diary as well as the copy have disappeared but Las Casas abstract survived. His work is a primary source for the early period of Spanish Colonialism. In 1550 he took part in official debates on the Indian question and used this opportunity to prepare a series of nine essays that subsequently appeared in Seville in 1552 and 1553. He was keenly aware of the power of the printed word, so much so he ignored the need to secure royal permissions before publishing. With their wide ranging indictment of Spanish atrocities, they had an immediate impact in Europe. They were widely translated and frequently reissued, especially in anti-Spanish contexts. Las Casas became Spain s witness against itself. The critique was particularly powerful because Las Casas was not only a master of philosophy and logic, he was an acute observer who reported on the situation of the Indians in an immediate and persuasive style. A Spanish Dominican friar and missionary, de las Casas arrived in Hispaniola in 1502, where he worked for many years as a bishop and Protector of the Indians . A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies (Spanish: Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias) is an account written in 1542 (published in Seville in 1552) about the mistreatment of the indigenous peoples of the Americas in colonial times and sent to then-Prince Philip II of Spain. One of the stated purposes for writing the account was Las Casas's fear of Spain coming under divine punishment and his concern for the souls of the native peoples. The account was one of the first attempts by a Spanish writer of the colonial era to depict the unfair treatment that the indigenous people endured during the early stages of the Spanish conquest of the Greater Antilles, particularly the island of Hispaniola. Las Casas's point of view can be described as being heavily against some of the Spanish methods of colonization, which, as he described them, inflicted great losses on the indigenous occupants of the islands. In addition, his critique towards the colonizers served to bring awareness to his audience on the true meaning of Christianity, to dismantle any misconceptions on evangelization. His account was largely responsible for the adoption of the New Laws of 1542, which abolished native slavery for the first time in European colonial history and led to the Valladolid debate. In 1550, Las Casas debated in Valladolid his views on the American Indians with Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda in front of the Spanish court. Sepúlveda, a humanist lawyer born in 1490, was an important figure in the court of Charles V where he served as the Emperor's chaplain and his official historian. In 1544, Sepúlveda wrote Democrates Alter (or, on the Just Causes for War Against the Indians). This became the most important text at the time supporting the Spanish conquest of the Americas and their methods. The text justified theoretically following Aristotelian ideas of natural slavery the inferiority of Indians and their enslavement by the Spaniards. He claimed that the Indians had no ruler, and no laws, so any civilized man could legitimately appropriate them. In other words, Sepúlveda considered the Indians to be pre-social men with no rights or property. The debate, which continued in 1551, reached no firm conclusion; but the court seemed to agree with Las Casas, and demanded a better treatment for the Indians. The book became an important element in the creation and propagation of the so-called Black Legend the tradition of describing the Spanish empire as exceptionally morally corrupt and violent. It was republished several times by groups that were critical of the Spanish realm for political or religious reasons. The first edition in translation was published in Dutch in 1578, during the religious persecution of Dutch Protestants by the Spanish crown, followed by editions in French (1578), English (1583), and German (1599) Italian from the 1552 Spanish edition (1626) all countries where religious wars were raging. Beautiful late 17th-century edition of a central primary source in the conquest of the Americas, bound somewhat incongruously with an early edition of French buccaneer Montaubon's 1695 voyage to the Caribbean. Las Casas first sailed to the West Indies when he was only eighteen, participating in the brutal Spanish occupation of Cuba. Upon his conversion, he dedicated his life to fighting the devastation caused by himself and his countrymen. This publication contains a French translation of four tracts from his most famous work, A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE DESTRUCTION OF THE INDIES, which was first published in nine tracts in 1552. The book documented Spanish depredations in the New World in an attempt to persuade the Spanish government to change its policies. Today, Las Casas is regularly cited in modern legislation attempting to rename Columbus Day. Las Casas is bound with Etienne de Montauban's account of his 1695 voyage attacking English and Spanish colonies in the Caribbean. The first edition, published only the year before, is extremely scarce, with only one copy at auction in the past 40 years; in 1699 the account would be incorporated into Exquemelin's HISTORY OF THE BUCCANEERS OF AMERICA. 12mo. 5.75'' x 3.5''. Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566) was among the most influential figures in the definition of juridical and social principles for the Spanish colonisation of the Americas. One of the earliest settlers, he freed his native slaves in 1515, later defending their rights in front of the Emperor Charles V. In the 1520s, he joined the Dominican order and acted as a missionary for several years. He was the first to be appointed to the office of Protector of the Indios , responsible for the well-being of the natives in the colonies. Originally published as Entre los remedios in Seville in 1552, Libertà first appeared in Italian in 1636 as Il supplice schiavo indiano . Addressed to Charles V, it was a manifesto (in 20 points) against encomienda , i.e., the Spanish settlers practice, authorised by the Crown, of exacting tributes and forced labour from the natives. It gave fundamental contributions to the development of a canon law seeking to keep separate the reasons of the evangelisation of new peoples and those of the state , and to reflections on the natural right of the natives and the necessity to balance evangelisation and human dignity (Dalla Torre, 9-10). Translated by the printer Marco Ginammi, but maintaining the Spanish original, the 1640 edition was dedicated to Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma, who had visited his bookshop in Venice. Ginammi, who had also printed Bartolomé s work on the conquest and destruction of the Indies, decided also to print that on the natives right to freedom because freedom should come before conquest . Las Casas arrived in Cuba in 1502 and spent most of the ensuing years in the Caribbean and Mexico until his return to Spain in 1547. An early critic of Spanish policy, he nonetheless rose to be Bishop of Chiapas. He witnessed firsthand the appalling destruction of the native population at the hands of the Spanish, and after his return to Spain and throughout his old age, he launched a series of attacks on Spanish policy. Sería en el período comprendido entre 1515 y 1517 cuando llevó a cabo su primer intento de defensa en la Corte peninsular. Fue el Cardenal Jiménez Cisneros quien le dio el título de «Protector de los indios» y en 1520 lo autorizó para fundar una colonia en Santo Domingo, la cual fracasó. En 1514 se produce un cambio en su vida tras una etapa de crisis y es entonces cuando comienza su labor como defensor de los indios. No sería hasta 1523 cuando decide su ingreso en la Orden Dominicana. Se lo consideraba un agitador en la Corte de Carlos V y fue gracias a su gestión que las Nuevas Leyes de Indias salieron adelante en 1542. Incluso, se logró que por algún tiempo el sistema de encomiendas se suprimiera. De hecho, es uno de los mayores exponentes de la «leyenda negra» española. Una de sus máximas desilusiones fue el fracaso de la comisión de jerónimos (en la que él mismo participó), la cual se iba a encargar de ir al Nuevo Mundo para investigar si era cierto lo que se denunciaba. Promulgaba una organización colonial pacífica, sin crueldad. Estaba a favor de emplear medios alternativos de colonización y evangelización, sin el uso de la violencia. Sin embargo, cometió un grave error, del que posteriormente se arrepentiría, al recomendar la importación de esclavos negros africanos para liberar a los indios de los trabajos forzosos. Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas no sólo limitó su acción humanitaria y de defensa a Cuba o La Española, sino que participó en otros lugares como Perú y Guatemala. En 1544 fue nombrado obispo de Chiapas y anteriormente había rechazado el mismo cargo en Cuzco. Realizó varios viajes oceánicos, siempre con el objetivo de defender a los indios. Su regreso definitivo a España se produjo en 1547. En 1551 refutó la tesis de Juan Ginés Sepúlveda, quien defendía la superioridad europea y licitaba la guerra contra los naturales. Las Casas murió en el Convento de Atocha. La obra de Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas está encaminada a la defensa de los indios. Intentaba demostrar su valía y la calidad de su cultura. Las Casas creía firmemente en la posibilidad de una cristianización pacífica de los indígenas. Su historia está documentada, no es leyenda sino recuento de lo que él mismo u otros testigos fiables pudieron observar. Por ello contradice reiteradamente a Oviedo, el autor de crónicas oficiales.
