Laid in is the description from The Philadelphia Print Shop, which reads: The Port Folio was a new type of American magazine, "Devoted to Useful Science, the Liberal Arts, Legitimate Criticism, and Polite Literature." It was the product of the new century, appearing first in January 1801. As with the many magazines that followed it, The Port Folio included numerous illustrations, including this view by Alexander Wilson. Wilson (1766-1813) is best known as the 'father of American ornithology,' but he was also a poet and landscape artist. In 1804, Wilson and two companions traveled through the American backwoods on a grand excursion to Niagara Falls. This trip was celebrated in Wilson's paean to American nature, "The Foresters".This poem was accompanied by engravings after Wilson showing scenes and events from the trip, including two views of Niagara Falls. Here is a rare example of both of the Niagara views included in the original issue of the magazine, along with the accompanying text of Wilson's poem." Condición: Fine. This beautifully engraved view shows Philadelphia's Centre Square Pump House, the first municipal waterworks in the city. It's Neoclassical design reflects Philadelphia s classical inheritance, while the flowing fountains and plumes of smoke highlight industrial activity and modernity. Despite the idyllic presentation, the pump houses' functions were lacking and it was quickly superseded by the Fairmount Water Works. The building was demolished in 1829, shortly before the work was published. The scene was drawn by noted landscape artist John James Barralet and published in Philadelphia by H. Quig around 1830. This is a nice example of the 4th state, identifiable by Quig's imprint below the title. The third and fourth states are notable because of the presence of a 'ghost' between the two wagons. Quig had tried to add a small figure to liven the scene, but failed with his proportions and attempted (unsuccessfully) to 'erase' the addition to the plate. First state. Fine condition, with only two very short tears. Stipple engraving by Cornelius Tiebout. Barralet was an Irish artist who came to Philadelphia about 1795. This is among the finest examples of his work known. This water works was located in the center of Philadelphia, at what is now Broad and Market Streets, the site of Philadelphia City Hall. The print is dated by the statue by Benjamin Rush seen here, Nymph of the Schuylkill, which was erected in 1809 and the smoke billowing from the building. The steam engine inside was shut down in 1815.
