Seitdem wurde kontinuierlich und in wachsender Zahl eine Reihe von größeren Ausgrabungen durchgeführt, und es wurden Publikationen herausgebracht. Wenn diese Arbeiten auch heute noch nicht zum Abschluss gebracht werden können, so ist doch der große Fortschritt im Erkenntnisstand und die Dynamik des historischen Geschehens in jenen Jahrhunderten, von der zweiten Hälfte des letzten Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bis zum Ende des 2. Jh. n. Chr. evident. Den Kernpunkt bildet die genaue Datierung der Bodenfunde in der absoluten Chronologie, um sie mit schriftlich überlieferten historischen Ereignissen in Verbindung bringen zu können. Für die Geschichte Mitteldeutschlands in der Zeit um Christi Geburt liegen einige neuere Arbeiten vor, die versuchen, eine feinere Chronologie für die Spätlatenezeit, Stufe D, oder römische Kaiserzeit Eggers A zu geben. In der relativen Chronologie besteht weitgehend Einigkeit. Gleichzeitig erhebt sich natürlich auch die Frage nach der absoluten Chronologie der Bodenfunde dieser Zeit in Mitteldeutschland. Die bekannten zusammenfassenden Arbeiten für die frühe römische Kaiserzeit oder auch die sogenannte Übergangszeit" haben gezeigt, dass neue Ausgrabungen von möglichst vollständig erfassten Gräberfeldern die Forschung vorwärts bringen müssen. So hat das Brandgräberfeld von Schkopau, Ldkr. Merseburg-Querfurt, neue Anstöße für die frühen Zeiten, d. h. für die Großromstedter Gruppe, gegeben. Durch die Reihe grundlegender Aufsätze und Monographien über die frühe römische Kaiserzeit Mitteldeutschlands ist eine sichere relative Chronologie zu erkennen. Dagegen schwanken die absoluten Zahlen in der Ansetzung der Stufe A (Latene D) bis zu etwa 50 Jahren. Es fällt der Forschung schwer, absolute historische Zeitangaben mit Funden gleichzusetzen. So sind die historischen Nachrichten über die "Stämme der Germanen" neu zu hinterfragen. Dann könnten hoffentlich die Bodenfunde besser in den Geschichtsablauf eingearbeitet werden. Auch die Methode zur Auslegung historischer Daten ist zu überdenken. Es wird trotz nachgewiesener politischer Veränderungen, z. B. die Eroberung Galliens durch Caesar, keine scharfe Grenze im Kulturgut anzunehmen sein. So wird für den Titelberg, ein Oppidum im luxemburgischen Eifelgebiet, ein weiteres Bestehen, sogar eine Blütezeit für das 2. Jahrzehnt v. Chr. angenommen.
