I do not think that a comprehensive determination of the relation between Kochanowski's poetry and the tradition of ancient literature ought yet to be attempted. With so much analysis still to be done, it would be premature. The view that I wish to express concerns only one aspect of the functioning of classical material in Kochanowski's works. I arrived at this view while editing only some of the poet's works, but I am tempted to believe that it applies to his entire output and, in part, more broadly to all Renaissance poetry of whatever quality. I wish to show that appropriate research into the classical tradition in these works can provide important information that may well elucidate certain mechanisms of their perception. It can help us understand the variety of the public intended by the author, some aspects of reception among later generations, and even some scholarly disputes. Its burdensome style, allegories based on alien associations and appealing to emotions which we do not experience, distance it effectively from a modem reader. What it presents on the stage is a larger or smaller episode in the eternal struggle between good and evil: the struggle for a human soul; always the same, though taking place in various settings and at different times. The performance itself is also a shot directed into the center of this struggle at the Devilish Powers besetting the souls of the spectators. The modem reader of the text of a Jesuit performance remains however - and quite naturally indifferent to all of that.
