Der vom oberen Kaiserin-Augusta-Fluß stammende Haarschmuck (Fig. 9, VI 30553), eine harte Holznadel, mit einer bemalten Schnitzerei aus schwammigem Erythrinaholze als Kopf, läßt ebenfalls auf der weißgrundierten Wangenfläche je einen schwarzen, runden Fleck oberhalb der Mundwinkel deutlich erkennen. Ob dieser gemalte Wangenschmuck in dieser ethnographischen Provinz vielleicht eine Nachbildung am lebenden Vorbilde bedeutet, läßt sich bei unserer mangelhaften Kenntnis der Sitten und Gebräuche jener Gegenden nicht entscheiden. Der tonverkleidete Schädel (Fig. 10, VI 33482), dessen Gesichtsoberfläche das lateritfarbene Aussehen der Modelliermasse aufweist, auf die mit grauer Farbe schwungvoll stark gekrümmte Linien und breitere Farbflächen aufgetragen sind, hat ebenfalls beidseitig auf den Wangen wenig unterhalb des hervorstehenden Backenknochens einen charakteristischen runden Fleck, ausgespart in seiner grauen Umgebung; dann ein nochmals ausgesparter roter Ring inmitten des weiteren grauen Feldes. Allem Anscheine nach ist hier beim Künstler die Erinnerung an das Vorbild beim Lebenden noch nicht gewichen. Bestärkend wirkt die plastisch hervortretende Stelle auf einem Tongefäße (Fig 11) vom Mittellaufe des Dörferflusses, einem südlichen Nebenflusse des Sepik, das als Musikinstrument dient; die Kopfform ist hohl, die Blasöffnung auf der Hinterhauptsseite, der Fuß weit ausgehöhlt. Zwischen Mundwinkel und Ohr, seitlich vom Auge auf der Wangenfläche überragt auf beiden Gesichtshälften eine rundliche, in der Mitte wenig konkave Protuberanz um mehrere Millimeter die Gesichtsebene - ein greifbarer Wangenzierrat. Daß es sich hier nicht um ein Phantasiegebilde oder um ein bloß dekoratives Zierstück handelt, beweist ein Flechtwerk (Fig. 12, VI 30310), das ebenfalls - leider ohne genauere Ortsangabe - vom Kaiserin-Augusta-Flusse stammt, ein Träger für eine Schüssel, die im Innern des Gestelles auf seinem ringförmigen Untersatze ruht. Der oberen geflochtenen Maske mit ihrem reichen Haartroddelbehang ist zu beiden Seiten der konkav-vertieften Nase mit ihrer mächtigen Öffnung im Saeptum je ein kreisförmiges, im Zentrum durchlochtes Scheibchen aus Flechtwerk aufgesetzt, um möglichst plastisch einen Wangenschmuck zu markieren, einen Backenzierrat, den die weiße Bemalung des Nasenrückens und der Partien um die Augen noch markanter hervortreten läßt. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit grenzt an Gewißheit im Hinblick auf den in Kambringi am mittleren Kaiserin-Augusta-Flusse erworbenen Zierschädel (Fig. 13 und 14). Reich ist er mit Kauri-und Nassagehäusen verziert. Auf jeder Wange findet sich an der kritischen Stelle eine Conusbasis in die Modelliermasse eingelassen; aus der zentralen Öffnung im Spirenteile hängt ein zierliches Kettchen aus Halmen mit einem Anhängsel aus Kuskusfell herab - ein vollausgebildeter Wangenschmuck, von dem aus bei rückwärtsschauender Betrachtung sich die geflochtenen Scheibchen, die runden Hervorragungen aus Ton, die ausgesparten oder aufgemalten Kreise, die Protuberanzen aus Holz auf den Wangen sowie die warzenförmigen Gebilde aus plastischer Knetmasse bei den Neuhebridenlarven ohne Schwierigkeit erklären dürften: sämtlich Rudimente eines ehemaligen greifbaren Wangenschmucks.
