RARA PRIMA EDIZIONE di uno dei primissimi trattati dedicati integralmente alla meteorologia e alle previsioni del tempo, probabilmente il primo in assoluto ad opera di un autore italiano. L'opera si apre con una lettera del cardinale Pompeo Colonna al Nifo, contenente gli elogi dell'autore e della dedicataria del volume, ossia la marchesa del Vasto, Maria d'Aragona. Nella dedica vera e propria, di gusto allegorico-narrativo, il Nifo racconta a Maria di come egli, trovandosi a caccia in un bosco, s'imbatté in una figura femminile di grande bellezza che recava in una mano una cornucopia e nell'altra un ramoscello di palma (sembra richiamarsi in parte alla figura femminile assisa sul globo terracqueo raffigurata sul titolo). Questa gli chiese donde provenisse la sua tristezza ed egli le rispose che poc'anzi aveva visto volare dei corvi sulla sua testa, cosa che egli aveva interpretato come un segno di imminente maltempo. Al che ella gli rispose che solamente lei conosceva i secreti per interpretare i segni del tempo. Dietro le insistenze del Nifo perché glieli rivelasse, ella acconsentì a patto che egli li rendesse noti alla sola persona in grado di meritarli, ossia la Marchesa del Vasto. Il giorno seguente il Nifo si recò nel bosco, come convenuto, e vi trovò un libro intitolato De verissimis temporum signis. La ninfa era svanita.La prima parte dell'opera tratta del tempo in generale, la seconda, divisa in 25 capitoli, è dedicata ai segni del bel tempo, mentre i 45 capitoli della terza parte riguardano la pioggia. Seguono quindi De signis Nivis, et Grandinis (1 capitolo), De signis ventorum (25 capitoli), De signis Diluviorum (3 capitoli, in parte dedicati anche alle alluvioni e ai terremoti), e infine De signis Fertilitatis, atque Inopiae (3 capitoli sul problema dell'alternanza di fertilità e carestia).L'opera si basa in gran parte sull'autorità degli autori antichi, in particolare Plinio, Teofrasto, il commento di Teone ad Arato, Virgilio e Alessandro d'Afrodisia, nonché su alcuni autori medievali come Beda, Averroe e Alberto Magno. Ma vi sono numerosi capitoli e giudizi assolutamente originali: per esempio, Nifo racconta curiosamente di come possa prevedere le variazioni metereologiche dai dolori di pancia e dall'appetito del suo cane, Falcon, e di come il suo retto sia un ottimo indicatore atmosferico.Il volume era già raro ai primi del Seicento, se è vero che Paolo Minerva, autore del De praesagiendis temporum mutationibus (Napoli, 1616), impiegò ben 12 anni a procurarsi una copia del trattato del Nifo.Il Nifo, nativo di Sessa, fu uno dei più grandi filosofi e scienziati del suo tempo. Studiò a Padova. Insegnò a Roma, Pisa, Salerno e Napoli. Fu uno dei favoriti di papa Leone X, che lo nominò conte palatino.
