Hardcover. Condición: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD; J. B. Ford And Company= 'same date on title and verso with no later printings'). You can see the green covers in the photos. They are quite clean. There is one small area on the rear cover where the green is lightened. The gilt design on the front is nicely bright and unworn. Same goes for the lettering on the spine. There is some rippling of the cloth on the spine and rear cover, a few puffy spots on the front. The top edge of the spine has minor wear, some creasing. The bottom edge of the spine has a few speck-sized spots of rub-through and a slight bit of discoloration. There is a small dent just off the front middle edge. There is a bump/crease under both top corners. The cover edges are in quite solid shape. The top and middle ones are free of rubbing and not dulled. Same at the front bottom edge. On the rear bottom edge there is a little bit of lightening of the dark green, but no real rubbing. A little surprisingly, there's no rub-through at the corners. There is a little bit of crinkling due to the bumps. The spine has a moderate forward lean. The book is pretty solidly bound. I have scrolled through all the pages. There is one gathering of pages (241-253) where only the top binding or possibly two top bindings are intact. The inside covers and end papers are brown. The juncture between the front ones looks pretty good, a slight curling up of a tiny bit of the paper in a few places, very minor. The binding of the front cover is very solid. The juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper has a fairly thin space with some webbing revealed. However it's only cosmetic, the binding of the rear cover is very solid, no give when you pull at it from the side. The front end paper has a clean detachment over its top half, also 1/2 inch coming up from the bottom edge. There are two end papers at both the front and rear of the book. The pages are in pretty good shape. Scrolling through, I saw only a fairly light bit of what looks a little more like foxing than soiling. The pages do have toning, but it's uniform. The tissue guard between the frontispiece and title page has a good deal of foxing. On the frontispiece the illustration itself is free of foxing but the surrounding area has some. The title page is also affected by the foxing, although it looks more like toning there. The bump at the front top corner of the covers created a light reverberating crease below the top corners of a large number early pages. The one at the top corner of the rear cover did the same thing to a good number of the later pages. None of the corner creases reach the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. On one page, a previous owner penciled over two dates and penciled at the margin what he believed the correct dates were. There is no other writing, no names, to be found anywhere else in the book. A very good price, the lowest I've seen, for this 1868 first edition.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Bound in Pictorial Green cloth, small library mark to the lower spine, and a bookplate presenting this book to the officers of the National Fire Service. A nice clean copy. Woodruff, born in 1817, started riding professionally at the age of 13. He was best known for his rides on Dexter, a champion trotter in the mid nineteenth century. He was a rider, trainer, breeder and owner. Woodruff is considered to be the first representative figure of Standardbred training tradition. Edited (i.e., ghost-written) by Charles J. Foster and published after Woodruff's death. Memoirs of the famous trainer of Lady Suffolk and many other great harness horses; also, the first American work on training trotters. This "new edition" adds a long appendix, updating the original and adding many time records.
