Hardcover. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of the book for sale anywhere on the Internet. In fact, it will be the Only signed copy of any of Benedict Crowell's books that are for sale on the Internet. Moreover, the book is signed and inscribed to the former Assistant Secretary Of War, John J. McCloy. So this book is signed and inscribed by the former Assistant Secretary Of War during World War I to the former Assistant Secretary Of War during World War II. After the war, McCloy was the US High Commissioner to Postwar Germany. The inscription reads: 'To Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy from Benedict Crowell.' The inscription is not dated (see photo) but would have been written no earlier than 1941, the year McCloy became Assistant Secretary Of War. Crowell, who died in 1952, was also a special consultant to McCloy's boss, Secretary Of War Stimson, during World War II. 'Crowell rose quickly through the ranks of the United States Army Reserve and eventually became a brigadier general before being tapped for political positions. During the war he went on to serve as Director of Munitions as well as Assistant Secretary of War. He also founded the Army Ordnance Association, a lobbying group, in 1919 and was its president for 25 years. He was a principal framer of the National Defense Act of 1920.' This centenarian book is not in pristine condition. It's taken some hits to its corners and to the top edge of its spine. You can see this in the photos. All four corners have spots of rub-through. The material at the top edge of the spine is torn and quite frayed. There is also a mark that goes through the 'A' and part of the 'M' in 'America' on the label on the spine. There is also a tiny bit of loss at the top edge of this label, which is otherwise in good shape. There are several thin tears at the bottom edge of the spine. The spot of rub-through at the top corners extends a little bit onto the top edges. The middle edges each have only one very tiny spot of rub-through. The rub-through on the bottom edges is confined to the corners. The covers are pretty clean. There is some fading and toning of the lighter blue color on the front and rear, but no conspicuous spots or stains. The book is pretty square and the spine is pretty straight. However, there is a significant crack with webbing showing (see photo) between the front inside cover and the signed front end paper. To a somewhat lesser degree this occurs again between the rear inside cover and blank rear end paper. The good news: there are no other cracks or spaces at the junctures between any of the facing pages in the book. The pages are all solidly bound. The covers have a little bit of give, but the webbing is holding, and neither cover is at risk of detaching. The paper is present on both the front and rear inside covers and could be glued back into place. The bump to the front top corner created a crease at the top corners of the first 60% of the pages. There is a nick at the middle edge of the pages in the Index. It caused a small tear to the last page of the Index, far from the print. The two blank rear end papers have a vertical crease. The second one has a small yellow label with the title, authors, and publisher's names printed on it. A very small bit of the paper along the middle edge of page 113 was created a little too long and has a little tear now. Neither this tear nor any of the top corner creases reach any of the print or illustrations. There are many, many photographic illustrations. They are all in very good condition, including the frontispiece which is protected by a tissue guard. The pages and illustrations are all exceptionally clean. I didn't see any soiling. The wear(creases, etc.) on the pages is limited to what I have already referenced. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing. The book was part of a series titled How America Went to War. Inscribed by Author(s).

Original poster for the seminal 1976 four-act avant-garde opera directed by Robert Wilson and composed by Philip Glass. "Einstein on the Beach" premiered on July 25, 1976, at the Festival d'Avignon in France, performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble and presented by the Byrd Hoffmann Foundation. It was also staged that summer in Hamburg, Paris, Belgrade, Venice, Brussels, and Rotterdam. In November of the same year, it made its American debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. One of Wilson's most well-known works, a quintessentially minimalist, formalist opera, as well as a turning point in American theater. Though rife throughout with symbols from Einstein's life and work, there is no direct plot line attached to him in the opera-instead he is portrayed predominantly as a historical figure. Also the first instance of Wilson's entr'acte vignettes, which he calls "knee plays." The piece was Glass' first and longest opera score, approximately five hours in length. In its original conception, there is no intermission-rather, the audience is encouraged to enter and leave as desired. 25 x 36 inches, rolled.
