First edition published by Presbyterian Board of Publication in Philadelphia, (1849). 8vo approximate r 6" tall. Illustrated with a frontispiece and one other plate. All plates present. 139 pages.pps. Original brown cloth worn but still good, lacks paper spine label else good. The author was a prominent churchman about central Virginia and was a confident of this famous Afro American preacher, in fact, there was a black preacher buried in his family plot at the Stonewall Jackson cemetery in Charlottesville Virginia. a rare slave narrative The story of the life of Uncle Jack, an African man who was sold as a slave in the 1770s & brought to Virginia where he converted to Christianity became a preacher. He is depicted in the frontis portrait conferring with Rev. White, here they share the Bible. however, according to Reverend White he was a student as much as a tutor to Uncle Jack. This is an important narrative missing from many collections of Afro Americana. Check Blockson collection and the Arthuro Schoemburg collection. Note torn title page at bottom with a one inch loss, hence our low price, needs repair, fair copy.
