Hardcover. Condición: g. First edition. Quarto. XV, 394, [2]pp. Original green cloth with gold lettering on spine. Mono-Alu Folklore is a model work of its kind. It is arranged to give the reader speedy access to any point which he desires to consult, for the author has prepared a very useful index to motives. In addition there are indexes to the flora, to the fauna, and to place names. Following the introduction are summaries of tales, introduced by a classification of tales into 11 groups. Part 2 of the book presents the Mono texts, English translations, tales with no Mono texts, and extensive notes. Part 3 comprises a Mono-English glossary and the indexes mentioned above. This work forms a valuable contribution to Melanesian linguistics. Some age-wear on binding with front cover bowed, minor rubbing along edges and slight staining on boards. Paper edges foxed. Previous owner's blind stamp on half-title page. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good-, interior in good to very good condition.

Renowned Sierra Leonean doctor Robert Wellesley-Cole's copy of this first edition study of the folklore of the inhabitants of the Bougainville Strait. The first edition of British anthropologist Gerald Camden Wheeler's study of the folk tales and traditions of the inhabitants of the Western Solomon Islands. The collection of tales and song-texts given in this volume were gathered during a stay of ten months in Alu and Mono, Bougainville Strait, between 1908 and 1909. Following Sierra Leone's Independence on 27 April 1961, then Prime Minister Milton Margai offered Wellesley-Cole the position of senior medical officer. In the publisher's original cloth binding.
