1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION OF FERMI'S "VERY BEAUTIFUL & SUGGESTIVE" PAPER ON THE IMPACT BETWEEN ELECTRICALLY CHARGED PARTICLES & ATOMS (Bohr Quote, Stolzenburg, Emergence of Quantum Mechanics, 71). ALSO FIRST EDITION OF WENTZEL'S QUANTUM THEORETICAL TREATMENT OF DISPERSION. Volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. "In statistical mechanics [Fermi] had written subtle papers on the ergodic hypothesis and on quantum theory. [In this paper] he developed an original form of analyzing collisions of charged particles" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection). Here Fermi "attempted to explain the retardation of swiftly moving particles by resolving the electric field of the charged particles into its harmonics, then comparing it with a radiation field having a suitable frequence distribution" (Stolzenburg). As Bohr understood it, Fermi wanted "to develop a theory of the stopping of swiftly moving particles and of the ionization produced by them in which a mechanical description of the collisions is altogether disregarded" (ibid). "[This paper describes Fermi's development of "the field produced by the charged particle by the Fourier integral and used the information from optical processes to determine the result of the collision" (Wenner) "[Fermi] compares the result of the interaction between the particle and the atom with the action of a number of harmonic radiation fields so chosen that the superposition of the electric forces at the position of the atom represents the rapidly changing electric field to which the electrons in the atom are subjected as a result of the swiftly passing particle. By estimating the action of each of these radiation fields by means of the laws holding for the absorption of X-rays, Fermi obtains values for the total ionization that agree with the experimental results in order of magnitude" (Stolzenburg, 71, 200). "This method was later refined and better justified on the basis of quantum mechanics and is generally known as the Weizsäcker-Williams method" (Wenner). With respect to the Wentzel paper, this is Wentzel's quantum theory formula for dispersion based on the correspondence principle, not to be confused with Wentzel's theory of interference presented earlier in the same year. "In Wentzel's formula the resonance frequency in dispersion is somewhat different from the natural spectroscopic frequency and causes a dissymmetry in dispersion which Wentzel claims is supported by experimental evidence in hydrogen" (Bulletin of the National Research Council, Issues 51-54, 165). "Wentzel supports a point of view according to which the quantum-theoretical dispersion formula. must be regarded as a kind of distorted classical dispersion formula" (van der Waerden, Sources of Quantum Mechanics, 237). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). Two small stamps on the rear of the title page as well as an envelope slot on the rear pastedown. Bears the ownership stamp (on ffp) of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund "was a German physicist from Karlsruhe known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund worked with such prestigious physicists as Schrödinger, Dirac, Heisenberg, Max Born, and Walter Bothe. He published more than 250 papers and essays in total. Hund made pivotal contributions to quantum theory - especially concerning the structure of the atom and of molecular spectra" (Wikipedia). Very slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a spine label; small area blackened to match cloth. Regardless, a handsome volume solidly and tightly bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; slight rubbing at the edges. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

¾ S. Gr.-4to. An den Physiker und Nobelpreisträger Isidor Isaac Rabi (1898 1988): [.] The value 3.10 31 cm2 as an upper limit to the electron-neutron cross section is indeed very interesting. I suppose this is theory. It would be fine if you could still further increase the accuracy of your measurements. The more upsetting is the large anomalous electron-proton interaction which causes the shift of the 2S level [.]". Perhaps one of the following subjects might interest you: I) a summarizing report on theories of point electrons, 2) a survey of the present status of Heisenberg s S-matrix theory? (I have not done much work on the S-matrix myself, but I happen to know 2 unpublished papers by Heisenberg which seem to be unknown in this country.) [.]". 1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S 1924 PAPER ON THE PHYSICS OF RADIOMETERS; EINSTEIN'S TRANSLATION OF BOSE'S SECOND PAPER ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE (WITH UNTITLED ADDENDUM BY EINSTEIN); & WENTZEL'S SECOND PROPHETIC PAPER ANTICIPATING FEYNMAN'S PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS. This volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. The Einstein authored paper, Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [On the Theory of Radiometric Forces] presents Einstein's theory on the cause of radiometric forces (the physics of radiometers). His paper finds that radiometric forces act also on surfaces normal to the temperature gradient, in other words, also on horizontal surfaces. Weil 139, 143a. ALSO INCLUDED: "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" by Gregor Wentzel. "Unbeknownst to Feynmann, Wiener, or Dirac, Wentzel had anticipated several of the most important features of the path integral formulation in two 1924 papers resolving differences between classical wave interference and the quantum nature of spectral lines. Published even before Heisenberg's quantum mechanics formulation, these papers included concepts such as the interpretation of a virtual path as a phase, the interference of phase paths, and the interpretation of the magnitude of the interference as a transition probability" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection, 372). Wentzel's vision was not vague, and he provides "a precise mathematical structure that closely matches Feynman's later findings" (Antoci, Wentzel's Path Integrals, 1). ALSO INCLUDED: "Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie" is Einstein's translation of Bose's second paper on the Bose-Einstein Condensate. Bose's first paper, "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" was a seminal paper in the history of quantum mechanics (and one which Einstein also translated for Bose). Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis represented the "discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck's radiation law. This second Bose paper specifically addresses the emission/absorption of electromagnetic radiation by matter. Einstein added an untitled addendum that he did not yet completely agree with the author's findings. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). Not ex-library. Nicely bound in black cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, very rare offprint, of the first appearance of Feynman diagrams, exactly a decade before Feynman himself 'introduced' them (almost certainly without knowing about Wentzel's paper) at the Pocono Conference. "In a 1938 review [the offered paper] of his earlier papers on neutron decay according to the theory of Yukawa, Wentzel used several diagrams that are precursors of Feynman diagrams. In particular, his Fig. 7 shows the neutron decay N -> Pev via an intermediate boson [Pi] (called a Bose-Proton by Wentzel, who used n rather than v for a neutrino)" (McDonald, Feynman Diagrams by Wentzel (1938), Princeton University, October 6, 2020). Klausen states that "Although, Feynman graphs have structural similarities to diagrams of Wentzel their genuine connection to perturbation theory was fundamentally new" (Hypergeometric Feynman integrals, PhD thesis, 2023). However, Ehburger notes that "early calculations in Fermi and meson field theory rested as well on a perturbative treatment. The concepts of intermediate states and virtual transitions also took centre stage here. Nevertheless, we also find strong visual aspects in the work of Gregor Wentzel, as represented in [Fig. 7]. Although one might argue that those figures were taken from a rather popular account of the theory, it is to note that such representation can also be found in his influential textbook Einführung in die Quantentheorie der Wellenfelder (1943)" (Ehburger, I'm not there. Or: was the virtual particle ever born. In: Biographies in the History of Physics (Forstner & Walker, eds.), 2020, p. 270). Large 8vo, pp. 273-279. Self-wrappers (a bit creased, folded once horizontally for posting). INSCRIBED by Wenzel 'Herr Prof. Coster, mit besten Grussen' in pencil on first page, i.e., Dirk Coster (1889-1950), Dutch physicist, co-discoverer of the element Hafnium and co-author with Niels Bohr of an important work on X-ray spectroscopy and the periodic system of the elements.
