Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Couple Photos Ilustrador. 1st Edition. 1955 First Printing, Near Fine/Very Good 291 pages, uncommon illustrated DJ with couple half inch closed tears over blue/green cloth hardcovers; Information in this book obtained from the earliest known account book kept by a free trader in the Rocky Mountain Northwest. In 1850 Major Owen purchased the site known as the St. Mary's Mission, founded by the priest Peter John De Smet, from the Jesuits. It was located close to present day Stevensville, MT in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana and he renamed it Fort Owen. The first portion of the ledger book was from Major Owen's entries and the second portion from the next owner of the fort, Washington J. McCormick. The ledger was found, a century after Owen made his first entry, in the barn loft of the McCormick residence in Missoula. Since the latter part of the ledger is of a different era and primarily focuses on records of grain being ground, the primary focus of the book is on that period from 1850 to 1860 when Major John Owen was the owner of the fort. This period was towards the end of the fur trade but before the discovery of the gold fields in MT. His entries provide valuable insight into the life of a trading post with much on the local area, Flathead Indians and other various residents. Includes short biographical sketches of the men who traded at Fort Owen in this 10 year period. Would make a good accompaniment to the two volume set containing the journals and letters of Major John Owen.
