From colonial New Spain to postcolonial Africa and India, Women and Contemporary World Literature examines ways in which women in literature function within their specific culture and circumstances to confront the challenges they encounter. In spite of fragmentation in their lives - much like quiltmakers - they piece together the scraps of their existence to form an integrated and complete whole. With its focus on power, fragmentation, and metaphor, and a strong interdisciplinary approach, this book offers a unique perspective to scholars, teachers, and students of comparative literature, contemporary world literature, colonial and postcolonial literature, women's studies, interdisciplinary studies, and literature and cultural studies. 129 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume was conceived as a space to provide visibility for South Asian women writers whose work has not had much exposure in the West. It contributes to the knowledge of South Asian women writers by including scholarship not only on little-known writers but also by scholars from India - in particular, those whose voices do not necessarily find themselves in western academic publications. Many South Asian women writers engage with the overall quest for survival, which can be affiliated with all the themes expressed in this volume: trauma, diaspora, injustice, resistance, place, space, language, and identity. The texts discussed herein contribute to the ongoing discourse related to such themes in postcolonial studies and transnational literature, and could be used in courses on South Asian literature, women's writing, postcolonial studies and literature, and world or transnational literature. 234 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the twentieth century there were certain creative individuals, both authors and musicians, who became particularly involved in exploring the relationship between words and music. French author and philosopher Albert Camus (1913-1960); Irish writer, dramatist, and poet Samuel Beckett (1906-1989); American composer and writer John Cage (1912-1992); and Canadian pianist Glenn Gould (1932-1982) all experimented with the interconnections between words and music in various ways. Camus incorporated musical terms and structures in some of his writing; Beckett treated words in a musical manner in some of his plays; Cage experimented with silences and rests in his work and created innovative scores for vocal solos in the Song Books; and in his radio documentaries Gould created complex contrapuntal musical textures with a mélange of words and music. Words and Music delves into some of the specific ways these powerhouses of the twentieth century moved beyond the boundaries of tradition and helped to redefine our perception and understanding of words and music in contemporary society. This text offers a unique perspective to scholars, teachers, and students of literature, music, performance, radio, and film, particularly researchers who focus on word and music studies, interdisciplinary studies, cultural studies, twentieth century literature, comparative literature, French literature, Irish literature, American literature, and contemporary and traditional classical music. 160 pp. Englisch.
