This book follows the course of his extensive travels, his varied loves, the triumphs and suffering of his intellectual life. It shows Dario in the differing environments of the Central America of his youth, then Chile in a period of prosperity, Buenos Aires emerging as a metropolis towards the end of the nineteenth century, and finally Paris and Madrid as they were before the first World War. Dario became a spokesman for the spiritual aims of his race and his times, a representative figure whose works are still today, fifty years after his death, more generally read in Spanish countries than those of any other Spanish-American. The author, a graduate of Swarthmore, studied at Johns Hopkins with the Spanish poet Pedro Salinas.
