One albumen photo, sized 8 x 9.5 in. mounted on beige-coloured 10 x 12 in. studio board, w/ photographer's imprint & caption written within negative at lower fore-edge (very minor over-exposure, soil spot at upper fore-edge, creasing & edgewear to image), still a G exemplar. An exceedingly scarce original photograph depicts the massive record crop of 1897 in Rosalia, Washington which in the 1890's had become one of the top wheat producers in Washington State. A few Palouse farmers had begun experimenting with wheat in the 1880's, and it took years to develop strains which would grow well in the hot dry climate. By 1896-97, Washington Farmers produced over 12 million bushels, and this image shows the year that wheat production overtook cattle ranching as top agricultural product in the Palouse. Thompson (b. 1862) was a noted photographer in Rosalia, Washington with studio who was active from 1895-1910, perhaps best remembered for his 1905, On the Battle Ground, Rosalia, Washington commemorating the 1858 Battle of Steptoe Butte. Original photographs of his are quite scarce.

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. A rare photograph by Scottish photographer and artist George Washington Wilson, taken on the second day of Prime Minister William E. Gladstone's visit to Lord Aberdeen and wife at Haddo House, while on tour of Scotland to promote his "Representation of the People Act, 1884" -- to greatly increase the people's right to vote. The photograph was taken on September 16, 1884, with legend below identifying those in the photograph. The National Trust for Scotland has an online article titled "Guest of Honor" about Gladstone's visit to the 1732 Haddo House. In particular it discusses the painting "Dinner at Haddo House, 1884" by Alfred Edward Emslie. The article describes Gladstone's arrival to a carnival-like atmosphere, with 220 riders escorting his carriage to the house, the thousands of people wandering about the grounds, and the dinner and the people attending it. "The following day [Sept. 16] Aberdeen photographer George Washington Wilson took an official group photo -- unfortunately, we have been unable to track this down." The photograph offered here is undoubtedly the one mentioned. Gladstone was on a month-long tour of Scotland to rally support for his bill. "This was the third of a series of reforms that together transformed UK democracy. It extended the franchise [voting] to working men living outwith towns and gave the vote to nearly 6 million more people.the tour was a triumph, and Gladstone successfully got the bill passed through parliament in December 1884." The photograph is 7 x 11" within the old mat, with printed legend below. Under glass, the frame size 15 x 18". .

Preserved in 3-ring binder, NF set w/ bright strong contrast. During the Great Depression, the 116th Photo Section and the Wallace Aerial Survey based out of Felts Field in Spokane, WA visually mapped much of the Pacific Northwest. The first image of the Forest Lake Region includes at the right margin of the image the blurred outlines of the Army Biplane wings, and the next shows the Felts Field as it appeared from the air in Oct., 1931. Other images show Fort Spokane, Washington State College covered in snow, along with Lake McDonald and Elizabeth Lake in Montana. Other shots show the Sun Valley Lodge in Idaho snow, as well as the Vista House at Mt. Spokane literally coated in powder. Also present are shots of Chimney Rock near Priest Lake, ID, Indian Pass from Ahern Glacier, Mt. Rainier, and Pendleton, Oregon's airport. Wallace (1891-1985) first enlisted in the 25th Aero Squadron in 1917, began flying with the Washington National Guard in the 1920's, and also set up the Wallace Air Service in Spokane in the mid-1920's which offered flying school, student training, airplane sales and service, and specialized in aerial photography. Publicado por F. Weathers, ca. 1900-1906]., [Benton City, Benton County, WA:, 1900
Librería: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, Estados Unidos de America
Four mounted silver gelatin photographs, sized 5 x 7 in. up to 6 x 8.5 in., all mounted on gray studio board, sized 7 x 9 in. up to 8 x 10 in., w/ photographer's signature & note on verso in lower corner of 1 photo (minor edgewear, light rubbing), still VG set of images. The first of these photographs by this mostly unknown photographer, shows the steam locomotive next to downed logs, pulling coal car No. 40, with engineer and conductor assisted by young boy wearing overalls holding an oil can. The N.C.T. Co. Railroad had been originally started to run a line from Kennewick to Yakima in 1900, and by 1909 had been absorbed by the Oregon & Washington Rairload & Navigation Co., and later the Union Pacific. The second of the tobacco shop shows two workers behind burgeoning counter, a whole array of pipes displayed below, the shelves piled with tobacco tins, and tobacco paraphernalia, pencils, fruits, and more, with North Pacific Brewing Co. poster dated 1908 on the wall. North Pacific Brewing Co. operated in Astoria, OR, and a branch brewery operated in Portland. The office shot captures two young men seated in a large office, with piles of paper, ink, pens, and one in the right fore-ground wearing ink-stained apron coveralls. The final mounted photo reveals a driver atop a water wagon being drawn by two very large horses in front of an insurance company and theatre, with views of a couple more brick buildings stretch. Weathers (1882-1973) was not only the US Postmaster in Wallowa County, OR, but also traveled as a photographer in Eastern Washington & Oregon, later retiring to Portland, OR.

Librería: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, Estados Unidos de America
Oblong 13.5 x 10.25 in. [98 pp (unpaginated).], on thick black paper. With 368 photographs tipped-in, most glued at corners, some printed on RPPC paper, and a few RPPC w/ identifying annotations w/in negative at lower fore-edge, a few mounted w/ black corners, sized from 1 x 1 in. up to 3.5 x 5.5 in., with most larger, and many w/ white ink annotations below, ink annotations in lower fore-edge, or manuscript on verso of a few. Contemporary flexible black cloth post-binder, gilt lettering stamped on front cover, sewn at gutter margin w/ black tie (minor bumping, edgewear to couple corners, foot of spine, a few images removed), still a very nice exemplar, w/ nearly all images retaining strong contrast. This nicely executed photo album vividly depicts the travels, lives, and adventures of a group of young Portlanders in the Progressive Era just before World War I, and then during the War. Young Helen Schultz (1899-1991) was the daughter of a local Portland Grocer who operated "The Anabel, Pure Food Grocery," and while attending Franklin High School she often trekked with her beau in their 1917 Model T to local parks such as Kenilworth Park, the reservoir near present-day Washington Park, and hiked Larch Trail and hunted on Mount Hood. Of particular interest are a series of RPPC images of Adams and Athena, Oregon in Umatilla County, with photos showing the downtown main streets, birds-eye of Adams, the Athena High School, and the Commercial Hotel, returned with notes on verso by Ellis describing he and his friend's adventures. A number of photos show the Marville & Thomas Watts wheat ranch near Athena, images of horse teams pulling the wheat reaper and threshing machine, horse teams, followed by images of the Pendleton Roundup, Spokane, and traveling on Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, with views of steamships, sailboats, and more. One of the images of the couple and their friends traveling on the Columbia River Highway, shows Ellis Hermann holding his camera and tripod at Crown Point, as well as several views of Multnomah Falls. Photos show Helen and friends hamming it up with large Edwardian hats, holding the handle of their push mower, and many views of the family grocery store, delivery truck, and horse-drawn wagon for P. Herrington Grocer. The album concludes with what appear to be Honeymoon photos after the couple's marriage including visits to the Cliff House in San Francisco, the Naval Training Camp in San Diego, and standing on the boundary line between the Mexico & United States. Helen was active in the Portland Chrysanthemum Society, the Beaverton, OR chapter of the Daughers of the Nile, and president of the Mt. Sylvania Garden Club. Ellis (1894-1967) worked as truck driver, Fuller Brush salesman, stock broker, and later department store buyer in Portland.

Four mounted giant silver gelatin photographs sized 11 x 14 in. mounted on 14 x 17 in. gray studio boards, info & photographer's imprint w/ in negative, board w/ embossed photographer's stamp at lower right corner of all 4 images (minor wear, rubbing, bumping to board corners, very slight lifting to couple corners of images, 1 image w/ very minor chipping to couple corners, chemical splash & processing error in upper blank of image, not present on studio board), still a VG- set of remarkable images w/ bright strong contrast. These four oversize original photographs document the logging operations of the W.P. Co. amidst the giant cedar stands in Southwestern Washington State, and are scarce surviving examples of what appear to be Ford's efforts to compete with the larger more expensive images produced by the Kinsey Bros. The first image of a logger standing next to a giant 55 foot cedar tree with choker cable stretched around its' circumference is an exceptional image of the old growth cedar being logged in the Pacific Northwest at the beginning of the 20th Century. The next two images with negative numbers 15 & 18 respectively capture the extensive holding pond of logging company, and the flow shooting through the flood dam constructed of massive timbers. In the background of the first, the massive timbers are being felled, and yarded down to the pond, where three lumberjacks with poles stand atop the floating logs. The fourth photographs vividly depicts a sprawling logging camp and sawmill operation perched on the slope of a hill, with giant stumps partially blocking some of the buildings, the W.P. Co. "Office" in the center of the image, and the sawmill and shake debris scattered amidst the pathways of the steep hillside. A minor developing error is present in the upper right, with angle overlay from another glass plate negative, not atypical of Ford photographs. Ford (1862-1914), was an avid professional photographer, and evangelist who became a pastor in the Pacific Northwest conducting revivals in Ilwaco, WA in the early 1890s. His photographs documenting logging operations, practices, and scenic views along the Columbia River embraced nearly every camp and fishing district along the river. He also operated a studio in Portland from 1900 to 1908, and all four photos bear the embossed imprint of his Portland studio. This cataloguer could find no reference to Ford's W.P. Co. logging operations, or images in any of the institutional holdings of his photographs, including U of O, U of W, Yale, Oregon Historical Society, and others.

Archive of 79 original photographic negatives, sized 4 x 6 in. to 8 x 10 in., with majority 8 x 10 in., nearly all w/ photographer's imprint, and negative number w/in negative at lower margin, some w/ captions, others with info preserved in pencil or pen on negative sleeves, all now preserved in archival mylar sleeves, and 3-ring clamshell archival box. This archive of original photographic negatives dramatically portrays the growing Pacific Northwest City following World War I through the Roaring 20's, and appears to be one of the larger extant private collections of both photographers. As Tacoma recovered from the recession and flu pandemic of 1919-1920, Boland was busily shooting photographs for the Dodge Brothers, Haynes & Chalmers, Willys-Overland, the Pacific Car Company Hudson, Packard & Oldsmobile dealership, along with Ford, Chrysler, Lincoln, and Auburn company reps. These striking images include a 1919 Dodge 4-door sedan in front of downtown hotel, a roadster; touring car & sedan parked in front of the Hudson Essex dealership; a 1927 Chrysler sedan with extensive Automobile Club badges; and even a 1928 Model A Ford pulled over by a Washington State Patrolman on a V-twin Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. There are also images of 1919 Auburn Roadster at Wright Park in Tacoma, 7-passenger sedan in front of the Remmert Motor Car Co. dealership, and others. Also depicted by Boland are many different trucks, and working truck vehicles, such as the JAX Trouble Car Co. towing wrecked automobiles; a 1921 Day-Elder Dump Truck for Harrison Bros., or Day-Elder heavy stave truck No. 4 for the West End Fuel Co., along with still another truck loading bound volumes and sheets from the Keystone Printing Co., owned by Gustaf Anderson next to the Peerless Grill. Others show dealership showrooms with vintage Art Deco lighting, the First Presbyterian Church, young girl on a touring car in front of Burson's, the ship "Virginia IV" partially sunk at the Pratt Dock. Other businesses include candy shop with production workers, Zerolene Standard Oil, Seattle Tacoma Limited buses and electric trolley, the Tacoma Passenger rail car "Oriental Express," the SS Gothicstar at the Co-op dock in Tacoma loading eggs, and even the ferry "Vashonia" for Washington Navigation Co. The Chapin Bowen negatives encompass similar themes, including images of a Tacoma Bus Co. bus parked in front of the offices; F.S. Harmon & Co., furniture company department store building, a view of Tacoma across massive log raft, the Tacoma tide-flats at the 11th Street Bridge, and others. Also included are photos for 1927 Rhodes Brothers delivery truck; the Arthur Bryan Motor Co. Chevrolet tow truck, their "Miss Chevrolet" speed launch parked in front of the dealership; and a 1929 Chrysler 4-door with driver in aviation goggles & cap. Also depicted are Parrish Ice Cream Trucks, 1929 GMC Truck, 1926 laying of the Northern Pacific cornerstone, or even the stylish 1927 Franklin 4-passenger sedan parked in front of the John Buffelin Estate for the Tacoma Franklin Co. dealership. Boland (1873-1950) was a photographer in Tacoma, WA for over 30 years during the opening decades of the 20th Century. Born in Tuscaloosa, AL, he moved to Tacoma in 1912 to teach "manual arts" in various schools around the area, and later owned a number of photographic studios in downtown Tacoma from 1915-1949. He died, camera in hand, while photographing US Navy ships in Bremerton. Bowen (1900-1956) served during World War I, and was later a longtime commercial and newspaper photographer in Tacoma, WA from 1925-1955, and was also responsible for launching other PNW photographer's careers, such as Everett Murray. Both photographers negatives are held by collections at the Washington State Historical Society, Univ. of Washington, and MOHAI in Seattle. All of these negatives have been professionally scanned and converted into JPG files, and will be available to the purchaser.

No Binding. Condición: Near Fine. Mammoth plate albumen print (21 x 15 1⁄4 in.), mounted on linen. Retouched in the negative. Some wear and soiling, some fading, a few creases. A rare survival. This magnificent mammoth plate panorama shows the National Mall and the Capitol as seen from the Smithsonian Castle. Several elements indicate the approximate date of this photograph. The Bartholdi Fountain is present. Made for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, it was moved to the grounds of the Botanic Gardens on the Mall in 1877. Work on the marble terraces on the west side of the Capitol grounds began in 1882, but that construction is not evident here. The photograph shows a National Mall unlike what we know today. The great lawns shown here were filled with trees in the following decades, many of them subsequently removed for construction and for restorations of the lawns. The Baltimore and Potomac railroad tracks, where Charles Guiteau would shoot James Garfield in 1881, run partway across the Mall at 6th Street. The Smithsonian museums of today are not yet present. Instead, scattered houses and small buildings pepper the landscape. This mammoth view is rare. We have not been able to trace another example.
