Facsimile ed. (Reading copy only.) Paperback small octavo, fair condition only (but complete), cancelled EX-LIBRARY, full-page black & white drawings (including frontispiece portrait), large foldout map at rear, inner hinge split (all pages firm), spine creased, library marks (rubber stamps including title page & fore-edge, scuffed base spine from label removal), minor edgewear. 308 pp. Facsimile edition. Colonel Warburton was the first explorer to cross the Australian continent from Alice Springs on the telegraph line, to Roebourne on the west coast (1873 - 1874). He was provided with 17 camels and six months supplies. He sought to arrive at the Swan River colony but was driven north. They endured long periods of extreme heat with little water, and survived only by killing the camels for meat. They were first to conquer the formidable Great Sandy Desert. Warburton was so worn our that an edited volume was prepared on his behalf by Charles Eden and H. W. Bates. A preface summarises some previous expeditions. Eden was author of 'My Wife and I in Queensland'. Bates was Assistant Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, London. (Originally published, Sampson Low, London, 1875. Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. London, 1869. Octavo, numerous advertisements (one folding, one with a tiny strip cut out) and 8 leaves of paper samples. Original gilt-decorated red cloth showing signs of age and use, with the covers reattached in an amateurish but acceptable manner; a good copy. With the ownership signature of the explorer Peter Egerton Warburton (1813-1889) in pencil on the preface page and his armorial bookplate ('Virtuti non armis fido') on the front pastedown; subsequent events suggest he may have lived to regret these sentiments. His entry on page 288 records that he was 'appointed commissioner of police for the province of South Australia, 1853'; significantly, an asterisk and two small marks has been pencilled around 'of police'. Warburton was dismissed from this position early in 1867. After a secret court of inquiry into the police force, the government suggested 'that other employment more congenial to his habits and tastes should be found', but it refused to show him the evidence. He refused to resign; a subsequent inquiry failed to reveal why he had been victimized, deplored his unfair treatment and vainly recommended reinstatement. Warburton didn't fade away; when he successfully conquered 'the formidable Great Sandy Desert to become the first to cross the continent from the centre to the west' in 1873-74, he was over 60 (albeit emaciated and blind in one eye after the gruelling trip).

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Adelaide, Government Printer, 1866. Foolscap folio, 9 pages plus a very large folding map, 'Explorations in the Northern Portion of the Province in 1866'. Drop-title; a few tiny holes in the gutter where removed from a bound volume; crease down the centre; map very lightly marked and creased; a very good copy in a cloth folder and slipcase (the latter with gilt-lettered leather title-labels on one side). South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 177 of 1866. Peter Egerton Warburton (1813-1889), at this stage of his life also the Commissioner of Police in South Australia, 'examined the northern shores of Lake Eyre, searching unsuccessfully for Sturt's Cooper's Creek but finding instead a large river, now named the Warburton River, which he traced as far as the Queensland border' (Wantrup, in the Davidson catalogue). Offered together with 'Colonel Warburton's Explorations, 1872-3' (Adelaide, Government Printer, 1874; foolscap folio, 24 pages; South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 28 of 1875). This is an account of a far more significant expedition. 'After leaving Alice Springs in April 1873, they endured long periods of extreme heat with little water, and survived only by killing the camels for meat. They reached the Oakover River with Warburton strapped to a camel. On 11 January 1874 they were brought to Charles Harper's de Grey station in northern Western Australia. They had conquered the formidable Great Sandy Desert to become the first to cross the continent from the centre to the west. Warburton was emaciated and blind in one eye; at a public banquet in Adelaide later he attributed their survival to his Aboriginal companion Charley' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). Owner's bookplate to endpaper, contemporary owner's signature, dated 1875 to half-title. Good. With an Introduction and Additions, by Charles H. Eden, Edited by H.W. Bates. 1st edition. Scarce. Colonel Peter Egerton Warburton CMG (1813-1889) was a British military officer, Commissioner of Police for South Australia, and an Australian explorer. In 1872 he led an epic expedition from Adelaide, crossing the arid centre of Australia, to the coast of Western Australia via Alice Springs. The expedition suffered great privations, due to extreme summer heat, meaning they could only travel at night, and loss of provisions. Many of their camels died within a few months. During the final stages Warburton was so weak he had to be carried prone on one of the surviving camels. He also lost the sight in one eye. Warburton was so weakend by the hardships suffered on the journey that he had neither 'health nor desire' to complete a narrative of the expedition, and his journals were edited for publication by the renowned explorer Henry Walter Bates, then of the Royal Geographical Society.
