Hardcover. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Engravings, Diagrams, Tables Etc Ilustrador. 31st. The for title "The Engine Driver's Guide" is followed by a description of the book's contents and objectives, adding ".to the management, care and working of steam boilers, engines and pumps and to examinations for certificates of competance, arithmatic for enginneers, indicator diagrams, lubrication". The title page also advises that contents include 100 engravings with this 31st edition being "thoroughly revised and partly re-written and with two new chapters on condensing engines." Author A C Wannan explians in his preface that the updating included another new chapter containing 50 questions (for examination preparation). He added that the book should not only be for examination preparation "but also of good practical value in the engine room." He noted that the "Guide" had established a large circulation, not only in Australia but in Africa, America and England and with this edition reached more than 40,000 copies. This truely was the era when the steam engine was king! Although the date of publication in not printed it was probably the late 1890s to early 1900s, as the opening chapter on "Regulations" is based on the Victorian (Aust) Factories Act of 1896. On the front cover and the spine of the book the title reads Wannan's Engine Driver's Guide," which differs from that on the title page -- "The Engine Drivers Guide." This copy is 258 pages followed by a one page advert for technical and model engineering books. The first 15 chapters are technical, covering the operation, care and maintenace of steam engines of various designs, types, sizes and purposes, one an interesting discussion on boiler explosions, then chapters deal with engineering mathmatics, lubrication and friction , closing with three on examinantion questions and answers. The book is illustratted with numerous technical engravings of high quality with some occupying a full page, also mechanical drawings, line diagrams and tables. There are only a few diagrams in the examinations section, The VG hard covers are a light orange with black titles front and spine, two small marks, of unknown origin, front top left corner and lower right corner, with a slight crease to the cover fabric right edge centre front, on the front pastedown is a pencil name of former owner, repeated top edge rear pastedown, FFEP has brown sunning shadow, text block otherwise excellent, clean and tight, no other inscriptions.
