Published by Methuen & Co., London, 1903. New Edition. The Illustrated Pocket Library of Plain and Coloured Books. A facsimile of the second edition published by John Major in 1824. 16mo up to 6½" tall. 416 pp. with a small spine label bound-in between final text page and free endpaper. Red cloth boards with paper title block to spine. Boards have general wear with a tiny worm hole midway along outside spine joint affecting inner hinge with a tiny loss of paper. Contents are in generally fine condition with browning to free endpapers front and back with some transfer to pastedowns. The Complete (Compleat) Angler was first published in 1653 and remains enduringly popular with 1,097 editions published between 1653 and 2019 in 9 languages.

Second part written by Charles Cotton. Advertisements to front. Presumed Ninth edition. Book has been rebound. Contains black and white illustrated plates. Severe cracking to rear hinge causing board to be loose. First few pages up to page VI are loose. Pages are moderately tanned with noticeable foxing throughout. Paper remnants with glue markings to front endpaper and hinge. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Plates are moderately tanned and foxed. Occasional water staining. Faint black marks throughout. Text remains legible. Occasional chipping to edges. Boards have heavy edge wear with corner bumping. Leather peeling heavily to all surfaces, with loss to corners and spine ends. Large split to rear joint. Visible scuffing and markings to boards. Glue marks to front.

With 1848 and 1910 ownership inscriptions to front blank. Lacking the engraved plates. Generally sound, with minor handling wear, front joint cracking but holding firmly, occasional foxing: Good or better. "[T]he first Angler edited, published and printed in America," notable for its "long erudite bibliographical preface, the copious notes in the text, and an appendix containing a very complete list of angling books published before 1847." COIGNEY 61.

This book would be worth it to have the covers reattached as it really is a beautiful binding. Facing last page (512) is a typeset printed list of plates to the Seventh Edition of the Complete Angler pasted on the blank free endpaper.
