Spine cover is torn, binding slightly loose. Scuffing and wear to the front hardcover board, with three dark marks on the front cover. Small dampstain on the front cover. Heavy wear and detachment of the spine. Scuffing and discolouration to the back cover board. Divot and tear to the top of the back cover board. Wear to corners. Text block decent but loose in parts. Gilt lettering and decoration to the front hardcover board. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book.

A very pleasing copy of this stunningly illustrated copy of The Rhinegold & The Valkyrie The 1914 impression of the English translation of this popular opera by German composer Richard Wagner.Thanks to the accompanying stunning illustrations by Arthur Rackham, the world and characters in this opera really come to life, giving the reader a well-rounded experience that only the live performance could exceed.During the "Golden Age" of British book illustration, Rackham was one of its leading artists. He used expressive line paired with a subtle use of watercolour to create his beautiful images. This work contains examples of Rackham's ethereal figures such as his fairy tale characters and his grotesque and fantastic.Inscription in pencil to pastedown by previous owner: "With best wishes for Xmas and the New Year to Teddy Bear, H.M."Containing 36 illustrations and coloured plates as well as frontispiece by Rackham. The present copy is #1137 of 150 copies reserved for the United States. ix, 159(1) pages translated by Margaret Armour, with 34 tipped in colored plates by Arthur Rackham. Each color plate is tipped onto a stiff brown paper and accompanied by a tissue guard with descriptive letterpress, textual illustrations in black and white. C.S. Lewis, who called these lovely images "the very music made visible." Bound in three-quarter vellum over brown paper covered boards, brown spine labels gilt but rubbed. A very nice copy, internally clean and lacking the usual foxing to the images. Early bookseller's catalog description mounted to front pastedown.
