Libro
Hardcover. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Maps Ilustrador. 1st Thus. In his introduction the leading British military historian B H Liddell Hart describes this book as one of the most interesting memoirs of the commanders in the Second World War, and in some important respects the most illuminating of all. His assessment concludes that it is a book that "no one interested in war history can afford to miss." The author served with the German Army in WWI, during the inter-war years and at the outbreak of WWII commanded one of the last mounted cavalry regiments., In the Blitzkreig that saw the Dunkirk Evacuation and the Fall of France he commanded a motorised brigade in this campaign. General Senger then spent two years in Italy as a German liasion officer. His next active service appointment was commanding the 17th Panzer Division in an abortive attempt to relieve the surrounded 9th Army at Stalingrad. In mid-1943 he rerturned to Italy as liasion officer to the Italian Army in Sicily, where he was instrumental in arranging the evacuation of troops to the Italian mainland and then from Sardinia and Corsica. Particularly interesting are his observations on the Cassino battles where the Allies were held up for six months before the Garman's front was finally broken, although the subsequent advance up the Italian leg was slow and difficult. His is a very objective assessment of Germany's later war options, when the odds were heavily against it but false optimism prevailed. Toward the end of his account of WWII, as he saw it, General Senger presents two interesting overviews on the strategic controversies of the Allies and the causes of the defeat of Hitler's Germany. The final chapter covers his experience in capativity after the surrender of the German forces in Italy. A scarce book and one of the most interesting and objective accounts of WWII from the Axis side. First published in German 1960, translated by George Malcolm 1963. This copy from a Returned Services Club library, marked with small stamp FFEP, rear pastedown and twice through the text block in lower margin, ink letter H top front pastedown and FFEP, no other library markings or inscriptions. 368 pages including biographical notes, index, b/w frontis of author, 27 b/w photos, 14 maps. Red hard covers VG with light wear spine top and bottom, lower corners, text block excellent.
