First edition. First printing of the most comprehensive work in English about the career of Vladimir Favorsky, a key reference of the multifaceted artist. Russian graphic artist, art critic, and woodcut illustrator Vladimir Favorsky (also transliterated as Favorski) blended the traditional and the modern in his art. He helmed the Russian state art and technical school Vkhutemas - often compared in style and philosophy to Bauhaus - as rector during a tumultuous period in the 1920s, during which he resisted government efforts to mandate the artistic methods and styles of the students. Favorsky's perspective shines through in his extensive oeuvre of book illustrations; he was particularly fond of the codex as a vehicle for art, noting that "the book can serve simultaneously as an example of wholeness of design and variety of content" (Molok, 242). 11'' x 7.5''. Original pictorial boards. Illustrated in black and white. 322 pages. In original black-and-white pictorial slipcase. Slipcase with some edgewear, a couple tiny glue repairs; a touch of toning. Binding with some sunning to spine and rubbing to edges, boards with light spotting and toning. Interior sharp and bright. Very good plus in scarce original slipcase.

First edition thus. First printing of this collection of four short plays by Pushkin, with atmospheric woodcut illustrations by multifaceted artist Vladimir Favorski - one of Favorski's final works. Favorsky's high-contrast, emotional illustrations are a perfect match for Alexander Pushkin's TRAGEDIES, comprised of "Mozart and Salieri," "The Miserly Knight," "The Stone Guest," and "A Feast During the Plague." 10.25'' x 8''. Original tan cloth binding with black, gilt, and blue stamping. Original unclipped (no price) pictorial dust jacket. Black topstain. Original ribbon page marker. Illustrated in black and white. 110 pages. Jacket with light rubbing, a bit of chipping to corners and spine ends; tiny ink price to rear panel corner. Binding with a touch of bumping to spine ends. One dot of soil to fore-edge. Sound and clean. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.

Condición: Very good plus. First edition. Signed limited first edition thus, illustrated by Favorsky, of this Pushkin comic poem with a striking modern design. Russian graphic artist, art critic, and woodcut illustrator Vladimir Favorsky (also transliterated as Favorski) blended the traditional and the modern in his art. Favorsky's perspective shines through in his extensive oeuvre of book illustrations; he was particularly fond of the codex as a vehicle for art, noting that "the book can serve simultaneously as an example of wholeness of design and variety of content" (Molok, 242). Favorsky designed this stylish edition of one of Pushkin's more lighthearted works to incorporate smaller drawings in the margins in addition to larger illustrations, to mimic the writer's distinctive marginalia. 11.25'' x 7.5''. Original pictorial boards. Illustrated in black and white. 22, [6] pages. Small gift inscription ftom "Jay" to "Jack," dated 1933. Signed by Favorski to limitation page and numbered 166 of 500.
