Publicado por Lansdowne Press, Melbourne - first edition, 1968
Librería: Book Orphanage, McCrae, VIC, Australia
Hardcover, 9¾" x 7½", with dust jacket 112 pages Dark-green cloth-bound boards with white type to spine and white drawing to front cover, illustrated endpapers and title page, map, and 51 b&w photographs (mostly taken by the author). Victor Barker explores the many facets of the Fiji Island group - a gold mine below the surface in an extinct volcano, harvesting the sugar cane, the copra plantations, the island trading boats, and the Fijian chiefs and their peoples. One chapter is called "On an Island Trading Boat" and tells of his enjoyable time on the '"Uluilakeba", owned by the people of Lau Islands (loosely inserted clippings from 1973 Melbourne newspapers report the sinking of this vessel in a cyclone with a high death toll. Large folded map of Fiji Islands with neat extra written notes also inserted.) A previous owner of this book has carefully mounted 9 colour photograhs with captions to endpapers; and mounted a further 3 annotated colour photographs to chapter heads. These photographs are dated October '73 - three months before the sinking of the "Uluilakeba". One crew-member is photographed here. . VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket.
