1 S/W-Tafel, 339 S., 6 Chromolitho-Tafeln, 60 S. Anhang, 3 Bl. Anzeigen. Sprache: Englisch.

Second Edition. Small 8vo original cloth, illustrated, 339, [60 ]pp. Binding scuffed a little, with some minor wear to extremities. Top hinge a little weak, but still reasonably solid, and normal aging. Very good overall. The book is illustrated with six color lithographs showing the different races. Written shortly after the Civil War, this work is pretty direct in terms of its racist views of white supremacy. Van Erie argues that the natural state of Blacks is in slavery, and efforts to change that would result in misery for all. He goes on to indicate that the Northâ s misguided efforts to impose itâ s will on the South with respect to the Negro was forcing Southerners "to a fate more horrible than death itself!".
