In 1908 Gillett emigrated with her family to Andover, New Brunswick. She attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and in 1928 she attended the Royal College of Art in London, England. She later did a private study under J. E. H. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer and Fred Varley.Gillett taught at Saint John Vocational School and was active in the creation of Maritime Art magazine. This publication was the first Canadian magazine with a sole focus on the visual arts. The first issue was published in 1940.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original Chieftain goatskins, dyed the exact shade of RAF wool-barathea wartime uniform fabric. The front cover is a bronze bas-relief of an anonymous crew-member cast in bronze, recessed and bonded into the cover, this was created by the famous sculptor, James Butler RA, the marker ribbon of blue silk printed with the motto of RAF Bomber Command, 22 carat gold edging. 4to. 13¼'' x 10''. The print run is strictly limited to 401 copies, No. 1 being presented to HM The Queen, this copy being number 173.
