Soft Cover. Condición: Good. Paperback: 48 pages clean and tight. Numerous colour illustrations. Slight creasing. Dimensions: 19 x 0.6 x 27.3 cm. This fifteenth-century allegorical romance about the Heart (the Knight Cueur) in search of Love's Lady (Sweet Grace), has been called a crowning achievement not only of French book illumination but also of book illumination in general. King Rene of Anjou, the royal author of this tale, is believed by some scholars to have executed the splendid miniatures which illustrate Cueur's adventures. Cueur, accompanied by his page, Ardent Desire, is beset by the enemies of Love, who include Melancholy, Sadness, Denial, Wrath, Sloth and the Black Knight of Trouble and Anxiety. Numerous trials, battles and curses must be valiantly met before Cueur can win the kiss he craves from Sweet Grace. In the elegant and brilliantly colored illuminations, the painter creates a palpable, atmosphere wherein all elements whether the character: in the story, or nature's mood by day and by night spring to life on the page.
