The Hague Convention of 1899 are a series of international treaties and declarations negotiated at two international peace conferences at The Hague in the Netherlands. Along with the Geneva Conventions, the Hague Conventions were among the first formal statements of the laws of war and war crimes in the body of secular international law. The Convention with respect to the Laws and Customs of War on Land contains the laws to be used in all wars on land between signatories. It specifies the treatment of prisoners of war, includes the provisions of the Geneva Convention of 1864 for the treatment of the wounded, and other provisions. The section was ratified by all major powers mentioned above. The Hague Convention of 1907 reaffirmed these rules with minor revisions and was also ratified by the major powers. Reflects the rules of war baseline that the United States Army took into the First World War. The First World War was one of the earliest major conflicts fought under (or around) the provisions of the Hague Conventions. This work on the Rules of Land Warfare had been prepared for the use of officers of the land forces of the United States. It had been found essential to make many additions to the texts of the Hague and Geneva conventions, since these do not deal exhaustively with their subject matter. The text of the manual which is for the guidance of officers of our Army is the official translation of the French as ratified by the United States Senate. Especial use was made of The Rules of Land Warfare, prepared by officers of the English Army and Prof. Nagao Ariga's book, "La Guerre Russo-Japonaise" which dealt so carefully and thoroughly with the laws and uses of war during one of the greatest wars in the period just prior to the First World War. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Wraps. Condición: Fair. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No DJ present. x, 1140, [2] pages. Abbreviations. Appendix. Front and back covers partially detached, and heavily soiled, torn and chipped. The first edition of this catalogue was published in 1897, the second edition 1899, and the supplement to the second edition in 1904. The general arrangement is alphabetical by state with the following threefold division in each State: Official publications, such as reports of adjutants general, governors' messages, State registers, etc. , Regimental histories in alphabetical and numerical sequence, and Miscellaneous, such as State, county, and town histories, and all material bearing upon the local participation not embraced in the preceding divisions. General associations, both Union and Confederate, covering more than one State, memorial organizations, army corps, occasional periodicals, etc., are contained in the appendix. Many synonyms of Confederate organizations have been added. In several of the Southern and border States there were both Confederate and Federal organizations. It has been found convenient to designate the Federal organizations by the use of the word Union in parenthesis. According to information found on Wikipedia in August 2022, The American Civil War bibliography comprises books that deal in large part with the American Civil War. There are over 60,000 books on the war, with more appearing each month. Authors James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier stated in 2012, "No event in American history has been so thoroughly studied, not merely by historians, but by tens of thousands of other Americans who have made the war their hobby. Perhaps a hundred thousand books have been published about the Civil War." There is no complete bibliography to the war; the largest guide to books is over 40 years old and lists over 6,000 of the most valuable titles as evaluated by three leading scholars. Many specialized topics such as Abraham Lincoln, women, and medicine have their own lengthy bibliographies. The books on major campaigns typically contain their own specialized guides to the sources and literature. The most comprehensive guide to the historiography annotates over a thousand major titles, with an emphasis on military topics. The most recent guide to literary and non-military topics is A History of American Civil War Literature (2016) edited by Coleman Hutchison. It emphasizes cultural studies, memory, diaries, southern literary writings, and famous novelists. United States War Department. Bibliography of State Participation in the Civil War. Washington, D.C.: 1913, is listed among the enumerated bibliographies. This appears to be the last edition issued by the War Department. Third Edition Revised and Enlarged [stated].
