8°. 44 pp. with black and white illustrations, later wrappers (slightly age-toned and stained, otherwise in a good condition). KAZAN IMPRINT / TATAR HISTORY: [Bulgar Harabeleri hem Burunegi Bulgarlari / The Ruins of Bolghar and the Ancient Bulgars] A rare Tatar publication with an illustrated text on the ruins of the ancient city Bolghar, the capital of Volga Bulgaria from the 8th until 15th century, was printed in Kazan in 1908. A rare Tatar publication with an illustrated text on the ruins of the ancient city Bolghar, the capital of Volga Bulgaria from the 8th until 15th century, was printed in Kazan in 1908. Bolghar is situated south of Kazan. Once a rich city with impressive buildings was ransacked in 1431. During the Soviet times it was known as a pilgrimage place for the Muslims from the Soviet Union, as they can not make the Hajj to Mecca. Today the buildings are protected by UNESCO. The text was originally published in English, as a part of an important book Kazan, the Ancient Capital of the Tartar Khans (1854) by Edward Tracy Turnerelli (1813-1896), who travelled to Saint Petersburg as a teacher and worked as an English lecturer in Kazan. The chapter on Bolghar was translated to Russian and issued under a title Razvalinite na Bolgar i drevnite blgari. This Russian version served Nadzib Halfin, an author and politician from Kazan, to publish his Tatar version of the book with a possible goal to strengthen the identity of the locals and awareness of the presence of Tatars in the region through historical evidence. In 1918, Halfin was on the committee to proclaim the independence Idel-Ural State also known as a Volga-Ural State, a short-lived independent state of Turkic peoples and Volga Germans. The Bolsheviks suppressed the state and annexed Kazan to the Soviet Union. The work is very rare. We could not find any institutional examples on Worldcat.

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. London, L. Booth, 1856. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A rare book. We can find no reference to it in commerce or in British institutions, indeed the only copy seems to be in LoC. No copy located at the BL. The book considers the Crimean War and the author's part in it. Turnerelli was a British artist and Tsar Nicholas I was his patron, under whom he spent 16 years in Russia. Turnerelli continually addresses the pseudo-epistolary work to 'Princess'; presumably Princess Charlotte (it would take a more thorough reading to confirm this). It seems, given that Turnerelli returned to Britain during the war that his patriotism was challenged, and a chunk of the book seems to be rationalising and justifying his dual loyalties. There's also a section about his writing of Nicholas's epitaph. In the postscript Turnerelli talks about how the book was received. There's nothing to say conclusively that he's refering to the present title, but it seems likely. Perhaps there was an earlier issue and the postscript was added on as a later issue (the binding seems to suggest this). Either way, it's a hard book to find and an interesting piece. It seems that Turnerelli also wrote a couple of ghost stories. The binding is a little rubbed and worn, with chipping to the spine tips. A few pencil inscriptions. The folding plate is intact. Overall though, it's in decent shape. [9575, Hyraxia Books].

Libro Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two Nights in a Haunted House in Russia was no 2 of Trunerelli's 'Christmas Tales for Christmas Charities. It comprisies 33 pages of preliminary matter, including advert page before the title detailing Turnerelli's charity fund raising from 1859 and the success of his first ghost story 'A Night in a Haunted House in Irleand' which has passed through 6 editions. The preliminary matter concerns reminiscences of the Russian Imperial family, intended to commemorate the marriage of the future King Edward VII to Queeen Alexandra in that year. The Ghost story itself occupies pages 1- 138, followed by a postscript and 'An Apology for a Ghost Story' finishing on page 150 printer's mark. The Books is bound in contemporary, and probably original olive morocco backed ribbed cloth by Birdsall, lettered in gilt to the spine. This is the first edition - so designated on the title page - of a major Victorian ghost story, issued by the author at his own expenses as a charity raising effort. It is very rare and may have been issued in wrappers as the Cambridge University copy is titled 'In Aid of the Distressed' on the cover. The title was re-issued with another story by Turnerelli in about 1890 as 'A Russian Princess and a Russian Ghost Story' where it is described as '51st Thousand.' but we have discovered no other printings that Summers refers to. Bound by Birdsall in a contemporary half olive morocco, spine gilt decorated. 12 cm x 18 cm. The blank endpapers are lightly foxed and with contemporary name of 'Chloe Fielding' the binding lightly rubbed at extremities, else a very good copy throughout.

London, Richard Bentley, 1854. Two volumes, 8vo. Original blue ribbed cloth, spines lettered and ornamented in gilt, covers ornamented in blind, front cover with Arabic script in gilt; pink endpapers, pp. viii, 338; vii, 316, two tinted lithographic frontispieces after the author (one retaining tissue guard); cloth a little rubbed, light offsetting to paste-downs, two hinges strengthened, 20th-century ownership inscriptions to front fly-leaves, a near-fine set of a great rarity. First edition. The author, tired of reading English accounts of summers spent in the â two capitalsâ of Russia (St. Petersburg and Moscow), decided to travel to less reported parts of the country. These volumes relay his â sketchesâ of â the land which constituted in former days the Kingdom of Kazanâ (modern-day Republic of Tatarstan). He interweaves his experiences with the history of the territory and makes a number of interesting observations on how the past of various religious sects and ethnic groups had determined their contemporary existence. The passage on the â Raskolnikiâ affords an astonished view of religious practices common in the Russian Orthodox Church before the reforms of the mid 17th century. Edward Tracy Turnerelli was the son of a celebrated Irish-Italian sculptor, who had been trained as an artist as well. 'In 1836 he went to Russia where he spent eighteen years travelling to remote parts and drawing its ancient monuments' (ODNB). Turnerelli deals in detail with a variety of Western Central Asian peoples - Turcic and other - and their ancient capitals, such as Astrakhan, Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, Vyatka (now Kirov), the main city of the Vyatichi, a people of Eastern Slavonic and Finno-Ugric descent, whose social structure was that of a self-governing democracy. He further visits the provinces of Orenburg, Perm, Simbirsk and Saratov.
