With fifty one plates across two volumes Across two volumes, Thomas Seccombe offers a historical of survey of English literature from the invention of the printing press to the early twentieth century. With fifteen plates to volume I, and thirty six plates to volume II, collated and complete. The work opens with a chapter on the influence of William Caxton, who was the first English retailer of printed books after he introduced the printing press to England in 1476. Following this, Seccombe offers an biographical sketch of England's important writers accompanied by portrait of the author, or an image inspired by their work. With sections on Drama and Lyric, Satire, Memoir, and the Novel, Seccombe's uncomplicated and entertaining work explores the output and influence of writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Samuel Jonson, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally sound. Lightly rubbed to the boards of Volume I, a little more so to Volume II. The cloth to Volume I is torn down the front joint and halfway down the rear joint. Rubbed to the spine, which is bumped with some closed tears to the head and tail. A little loss of cloth to the tail of volume II, with a tear at the front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Lightly foxed to the endpapers, but otherwise pages are clean. The opening pages of volume II are age toned. Good. book.

Sir William Robertson Nicoll CH (October 10, 1851 May 4, 1923) was a Scottish Free Church minister, journalist, editor, and man of letters. Thomas Seccombe (1866 1923) was a miscellaneous English writer and, from 1891 to 1901, assistant editor of the Dictionary of National Biography, writing over 700 entries. In a half-calf binding. Externally sound, though a little rubbed. Backstrip lifting. Front joint failed, although front board still attached. Internally, firmly bound. Hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Pages are bright and mainly clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: GOOD ONLY with a very good interior. Good Only. book.

Sun fading to both spines with rubbing and scuffing to title on spine of Vol 1. All pages clean and unmarked though tanned with more significant and uneven tanning to endpapers. Binding remains fairly strong on the whole but with some split bindings in both where binding is visible. Hinges remain intact and not cracked.

This is a remarkable set of the 12 parts of this item as originally issued. 522 pages in total, plus the additional advertisement pages in 11 of the parts. All parts are in remarkably good condition, apart from number 12, where the covers and the spine have become detached, though still present, and a few of the introductory pages are missing. In the other 11 there are slight chips, as is to be expected. Each cover has an art nouveau design, with a woodcut-type portrait of one of the authors include in the issue.
