Later red half-leather and dark grey boards, black skiver spine-panel with gilt title, top edge gilt, folio, 32 cm, 66 pp, 101 leaves of plates, tissue-guarded with text captions. From the preface: "A great deal of material towards the history of English Medieval Painting has now for some time been accumulating. There still remains to be composed a work, dealing exhaustively with all the aspects of this subject: but meanwhile, a review of some of the results achieved appears desirable, and we have therefore gladly complied with the invitation of the Publishers to make the facts contained in this volume internationally accessible. It may be hoped that the material here published and briefly commented upon, may, apart from its interest in itself, also be of some use in determining the question of the influence exercised abroad by the English School of Painting during the Middle Ages. A large proportion of our reproductions are from water colours made during a long period of years by one of the present writers and now mostly in the possession of the Victoria and Albert Museum." A series of excellent collotype plates illustrates all the mediaeval panel paintings of England which have come down to us, as well as numerous frescoes which have since been unhappily destroyed. Each plate accompanied by guard-sheet with descriptive letterpress. A handsomely bound ex-library volume, the library marks being a small paper spine-sticker, a bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper, small paper sticker on the front free endpaper, small label tipped-in to verso of title-page and a blindstamp on the margin of some text pages and each plate. Corners a trifle worn, otherwise Very Good.
