Letter to unknown architect requesting a monument to be designed to fit in a church, with neat plan below. The sheet of paper measures 13" x 8", top outer corner chipped, light toning and a few spots to paper. All of the text on one side, the verso blank lightly soiled, and one ink spot. Sir Mark Masterman Sykes, Bart., (1771-1823), was the eldest son of Sir Christopher Sykes, second baronet, of Sledmere, Yorkshire. He was born on the 20th of August 1771, and in his seventeenth year was sent to Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1795 he served the office of High Sheriff of Yorkshire, and on the death of his father in 1801 he succeeded to the title and estates. He was elected Member of Parliament for the city of York in 1807; was again returned in 1812 and 1813, and retired on account of ill health in 1820. Sir M. Masterman Sykes was twice married. His first wife was Henrietta, daughter and heiress of Henry Masterman of Settrington, Yorkshire, and on his union with her in 1795 he assumed the additional name of Masterman. She died in 1813, and in the following year he married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of William Tatton Egerton, and sister of Wilbraham Tatton Egerton, of Tatton Park, who survived him. Sir Mark died at Weymouth, on his way to London, on the 16th of February 1823. He had no children, and was succeeded by his brother, Sir Tatton Sykes.

5 Parts in one, 4to (275 x 220 mm), [4], 94, [4]; [4], 17, [3]; viii, [2], 99, [5]; [4], 53, [3]; [4], iv, 58pp., wide-margin copy, engraved portrait frontis., (a little spotted), all lots annotated in a neat contemporary hand with prices realised and buyers' names, MS biography of Sir Mark Masterman Sykes copied from the Gentleman's Magazine April 1823 on front free-endpaper, cont. half morocco, marbled boards, rubbed, re-backed with original spine laid-down corners bumped, uncut, top edge gilt a very good copy. Sykes's collection of old master and modern prints was on as impressive scale as his library. Some 4500 lots were sold over a period of ten months for nearly £18,000. On succeeding to the Estate a difficult decision had to be made by Sir Tatton Sykes. "A large sum of money had to be raised to pay off the considerable debt with which the Estate was encumbered. He did not wish to sell any land since this was the main source of the family's income and he was reluctant to part with his horses or hounds which represented his favourite pastime. This left his brothers works of art and his books. Though he had no trouble coming to a decision about the former, which comprised Italian paintings, sculptures, medals and coins, and a collection of some 50,000 prints "believed to be the rarest and best selected assemblage, particularly of portraits, of any private collection in the Kingdom", he has greater difficulty when it came to the latter, knowing the passion Mark had felt for them It is said that when the day came when the decision finally had to be made, he went and stood outside the door of the Library. the library itself being sold between the 11th and 24th May caused a sensation and buyers came from all over the world. Thomas Dibdin reflected "Never did the owner of such treasures so thoroughly enjoy them". The sale of the library and prints did not get the tiniest mention in Tatton's diaries. On May 11th the entry is blank. On May 24th it reads "York Races"." C. S. Sykes, The Big Hose. 2004. p.120.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. [iv], 94; [ii], 17; [ix], 99, [1]; [iii], 53, [3]; [iii], 58 pp. (lacking frontispiece portrait), 4to (8.5 x 10.5 in), half dark-brown morocco, dark-brown cloth sides, gilt title on spine, leather title label, five raised bands; marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. A wide-margined copy, interleaved with blanks. Priced in ink throughout, with buyers names given in Part One. A truly astonishing collection, comprised of 4,552 lots (some are portfolios of prints); the breadth of artists represented is wide, and includes Hollar, Faithorne, Delaram, Elstracke, Strange, Woollett, Morghen, Baldini, Botticelli, Mantegna, Vertue, Reynolds, Loggan, Bartolozzi, Blootelling, among others. Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823) was an MP, but more interestingly, was a founding member of the Roxburghe Club and a prominent bibliophile whose library of nearly 3,700 volumes was dispersed at auction the year before in 1823 in three sales. While an advertisement by Mr. Sotheby in Part Three of the present volume lists a forthcoming "Part VI," covering topographical prints connected with the County of York, the title page to Part the Fifth states it is the "Fifth and Last Part," and its summary description of the offerings includes the aforementioned York topographical items. A scarce set of all five parts. An attractive copy, with the pages quite well preserved; some minor rubbing to covers; small corner dampstains to a couple of leaves.
