There are a number of "companions" to Wagner, but this one, though now several decades old, is arguably the best, not only for a newcomer to Wagner but for seasoned devotees. It covers the background thoroughly in very readable prose, and includes one outstanding chapter on "The Critics of Wagner" by Lucy Beckett, whose point of view can only be described as original and illuminating. What she has to say about Nietzsche's various critiques of Wagner is as good as anything I've read on the subject, and her discussion of Thomas Mann's ambivalent but loving attitude towards Der Meister is pithy and perceptive to the nth degree. Probably the single most useful article on Wagner's compositional method ever written is that by Robert Bailey in this book. In just seventy pages is enough material to chart the course of several seminars and dissertations. I cannot recommend this essay highly enough. It becomes possible to understand how Wagner strode as he did through such vast sonic territories, and how certain it is that, all talk of revolutions aside, Wagner most certainly fit into the tradition. Hardcover. Condición: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 167 Seiten/pages, 31 x 23 cm, - In an urban zone crisscrossed by multilane freeways and gridded with broad boulevards, the roadside billboards of Los Angeles may well be the city's most visible platform for art. How Many Billboards? documents a 2010 project in which billboards in Los Angeles were turned over to 23 artists to do with as they wished, asserting the ongoing legacy of California Conceptualism and its combination of language-based strategies with Pop-inflected aesthetics. "Astonish!" declares Kenneth Anger's billboard, in commanding upper-case orange lettering, recapitulating Diaghilev's famous advice to Cocteau. "I Look Good, I Know," says Yvonne Rainer's billboard; "I Can't Hear, I Can't See, But I Look Good." Martha Rosler's collaboration with Josh Neufeld makes a plea for spending on higher education in California, and Renée Green's image of a darkened shore with silhouetted figures gathered near a tourist ferry is accompanied by the two-line commentary "Strangers begin again/Native strangers hosting." Other artists participating in this occasion are Michael Asher, Jennifer Bornstein, Eileen Cowin, Christina Fernandez, Ken Gonzales Day, Kira Lynn Harris, Larry Johnson, John Knight, David Lamelas, Brandon Lattu, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Kori Newkirk, Allen Ruppersberg, Allan Sekula, Susan Silton, Kerry Tribe, Jim Welling and Lauren Woods.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. DREAMINGS ? The Art of Aboriginal Australian Peter Sutton ? Christopher Anderson ? Philip Jones ? Françoise Dussart ? Steven Hemming Editor: Peter Sutton 1st Reprint 1991 This exhibition began with the suggestion of John Taylor, then Counsel General of Australia in New York. I was initially skeptical of the idea, as I was completely ignorant of what Australian Aboriginal Art is. Very little of it has been seen in America, and it is ignored in most histories of the world art. After some investigation I was shocked to find it one of the most exciting are traditions I had encountered in Asia or the Pacific. I was moved not only by the remarkable images and designs of its paintings, but also by the astonishing density and complexity of their meanings. The spiritual systems of aboriginal art seemed to me to rival those of better-known Asian cultures. This richness of the aboriginal artistic heritage is all the more striking because it arises in a society whose material culture is virtually nonexistent. it was as if almost all the human creative energy of a culture over tens of thousands of years old had been invested in the development of the society?s spiritual, intellectual, and social life. The paintings that seem to me so fresh and imaginative were in fact symbolic record of this achievement over millennia. Despite my eagerness to have the Asia Society introduce this art to American audiences, I was frustrated by the difficulty of finding the proper curators and art objects. Thanks to Ruth Barratt I met Peter Sutton, her brother, and discovered the South Australian Museum. We would not have gone forward with the project had we not had the good fortune of receiving the close corporation of that musing through its director, Lester Russell. For the South Australian Museum, which had never before participated in any two national project of this kind, this exhibition is an act of faith and generosity, and I?m deeply indebted to Lester Russell for his enthusiasm, commitment, and organizational ability. Andrew Pekarik Director, The Asia Society Galleries. Notes: Taken from the Dust Jacket Edition: First Edition October 1988 this copy is the First Reprint 1991 With over 300 illustrations and 155 color plates.
