Stab Sewn. Condición: Very good. First Edition. First edition thus. 8vo; 45pp; printed wrapper; publisher's stab sewn binding; fold-out map, 8 3/16" x 6 3/16" within the neat lines; light soiling to wrapper, chipping at fold, wrapper fragile but holding, binding tight; very good. Williamson 8306. From the title page: "This interesting narrative is a reprint from the Collections of 1843, of the Massachusetts Historical Society, furnished them by Prof. Sparks, from Englandâ "never before published in this country. It abounds in glowing and truthful descriptions of our coast, and the manners and customs of the natives, as they appeared to these, the first English explorers." James Rosier (1573-1609) was an English explorer who sailed with Captain George Waymouth from England to the coast of Massachusetts, now Maine, and wrote about the native peoples, flora and fauna, encountered there. George Prince presents an argument that it is the Georges River (also known as the St. George River) not the Kennebec or Penobscot Rivers that Rosier wrote about on Waymouth's expedition. He lays out his argument in logical terms, refuting the historian, William Strachey. Included with this publication is a copy of the fold-out map, Prince's "Remarks on the Separate Claims of the Contending Parties Who Favor the Kennebec and Penobscot Theories", a copy of "Rosier's Narrative", and an Appendix containing, "An extract from the first volume, fourth series, of the Massachusetts Historical Collection of â History of Travaile into Virginia' by William Strachey.".
