Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good-. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. 120 pp, 8 3/4" H. Colour frontispiece, b&w plates. "The author explains the principles according to which English Place-Names have been formed, so that the reader may be able to discover their meanings for himself. In the course of the book the reader will be rewarded with such delightful oddities as 'Cricket Malherbe', 'Uggley', 'Nipsells Rayments', 'Sacristan Heugh', 'Pity Me', 'Sixpenny Handley', 'Smug Oak', 'Mappowder with Plush', and very many more. Apart from such incidental entertainment the book, in fact, casts a new sidelight on the English scene as it was when its towns and villages, rivers and hills, were first given their names." Previous owner's name in ink on the front free endpaper, two creases at the top corner of page 103, a soft crease on the first few pages up to page 1, two tiny corner bumps, very light wrinkling at the bottom of the spine, tiny dent on the bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has moderate browning, several small edge tears and chips, now protected in removable mylar sleeve. Not Signed.
