Signed by the author on the half title page. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Near Fine; slight toning to pages; slight wear at tips, head, and tail. No DJ. Dr. Stanley graduated medical school and went to work at San Quentin as a prison doctor in 1913 and stayed until retirement in 1951. In this fascinating book of tales from prison, the author writes of the murderers, sex perverts, maniacs, thieves, and celebrities he encountered as chief surgeon of San Quentin. Case histories are woven into discussions of such serious topics as capital punishment and abortion, and such humorous sidelights as his popular "neurosis eradicator", a weird assortment of bottles filled with coloured water and wires running to nowhere. An entire chapter is devoted to a unique intervention with the notorious "Bluebeard" Watson, in which the wife killer explains how he felt while he murdered women. A clean very presentable and rare copy. Signed by Author(s).
