Personalità controversa, Stahl (1659-1734) fu il padre della teoria flogistica che dominò la chimica sino alla fine del XVIII secolo. Studiò medicina a Jena, fu professore ad Halle dal 1694, ed occupò l'incarico di Primo Medico Reale a Berlino dal 1715 al 1734. Figura di primo piano della chimica e medicina dell'epoca, i suoi contributi a entrambe le discipline furono assai importanti, in quanto fungevano da collegamento tra vecchi concetti e sperimentazioni. In quest'opera tradotta da d'Holbach, egli tenta di dimostrare che i sali sono terra miscelata ad acqua, oltre a discutere di varie composizioni saline e delle loro qualità. Spellature alle cerniere, più profonde, con strappi, a quella anteriore; minime mancanze alle cuffie; lievissime fioriture ai margini e, molto chiare, al frontespizio.
