Translated from the French by Bayle St. John with a preface by James Breck Perkins. The Duke of Saint-Simon, also known as Louis de Rouvroy, was a French soldier, diplomat and memoirist. His works are crucial for the study of French literature and give a full and comprehensive account of the court at Versailles of Louis XIV and the Regence at the start of his reign. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with shelf wear to the edges and marks to the boards. Slight fading to the spine. Spotting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. The hinges in volume one are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with some spotting to the frontispieces, some light age-toning to the edges and the occasional mark and crease. Very Good. book.
