Hardcover. Condición: Very Good (Plus). No Jacket. Later Printing. London: T. Cadell, 1794. David Hume's "History of England," written between 1754 and 1761, is rightly considered a masterwork; true lovers of history will read it today. The Scottish novelist Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) felt duty-bound to advance Hume's "History" to a more recent era. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of Volume II only of an eight-volume set. Full leather binding; two black labels; with titling and decorations in gilt. Clean text; 389 pages; with two engraved plates. The text is exceptionally bright, clear, and supple. Typically rubbed at the margins; bumped; chip to head of spine. Starting to split at the edges of the spine, but holding nicely. Despite these flaws, the book is attractive, with a nice presence. Later Printing. Full-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 18mo. 63 volumes, labelled 1-63 on spine. Contemporary or near contemporary full tree calf, with contrasting labels and Grecian motifs to spine, marbled endpapers, edges speckled, small booksellers label to flyleaf R. R. Balfour. Early neat signature John Taylor to title pages. The set in very good condition. Cooke was a publishing revolutionary. He set out to produce well-illustrated novels that could fit in the pocket, a precursor of Penguin books. Here are found the first 63 volumes of his new publishing endeavour, bound up in sequence. Individually, each volume usually has an engraved title page and from one to four engraved plates, most with their original tissue guards. In more detail, this set runs as follows: 1. Fielding: History of Tom Jones. Engraved series title page dated 1792, Engraved volume title page for Tom Jones, dated 1793, engraved dedication page dated 1793, printed title page for Tom Jones volume 1. Address by the publisher to the public, life of Henry Fielding, followed by author s dedication and text. Four plates to text, dated 1792. 2-4: Tom Jones. 5 Goldsmith, Vicar of Wakefield. Two volumes in one. 6-7 Fielding, H. Joseph Andrews. 8-9: Smollett, T. Roderick Random. 10-12 Sterne, L. Tristram Shandy. 13-15 Defoe, D. Robinson Crusoe (engraved title page dated 1793). 16 Le Sage The Devil Upon Two Sticks. 17. Smollett, T. Launcelot Greaves. Two vols in One. 18-20 Fielding, H. Amelia. 21-24 Smollet, T The Adventures of Gil Blas. 25-26 Smollet, T. Humphrey Clinker. 27 Sterne, L. Sentimental Journey; Voltaire, M de. Zadig or the book of Fate. 28-29 Morrell, C. The Tales of the Genii. 30-33 Smollet, T. Peregrine Pickle. 34-35 Mothe-Fenelon The Adventures of Telemachus. 36-37 Smollet, T. The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom. 38-39 Marmontel. Moral Tales. 40. Guelett, M Chinese Tales, or the Wonderful Adventures of the Mandarin Fum-Hoam, translated by the Reverend Stackhouse. 41. Swift, Dean. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, by Samuel Gulliver. 42. Kelly, H. Memoirs of a Magdalen or the History of Louisa Mildmay. 43. Smollet, T. History and Adventures of an Atom. 44. The Correspondence of Theodosius and Constantia. 45 Madame de Gafigny Memoirs of a Peruvian Princess. 46. Conventry, F. The History of Pompey the Little: or the life and adventures of a lap-dog. 47-51 Cervantes, M. Don Quixote to which is affixed some account of the author s life by Dr Smollet (plates dated 1797). 52-54 Chrysal, or the Adventures of a Guinea. 55. Dodd Rev. The Sisters or the History of Lucy and Caroline Sanson. Two volumes in One. 56. Swift, Dean. Tale of a Tub. 57 Fielding, H. A Journey from this world to the next. 58-59 Lennox, Mrs. The Female Quixote. 60 Lennox, Mrs Henrietta. Two volumes in one (plates dated 1798). 61 Fielding, H. The History of Jonathan Wild. 62. Marmontel. M. Belisarius. A Tale. [bound with] Dr Hawkesworth Almoran and Hamet 63. Voltaire, M. Candid. [Bound with] Walpole, H. Castle of Otranto. In between the two books in the final volume is bound a single leaf publisher s advertisement, explaining that they are 18mo, printed on a purposely commissioned wove paper, printed in a new type, with embellishments, with the utmost neatness. A remarkable set. So far as we can tell, the volumes appear to be mainly or all the first Cooke issues, have frequently series engraved title pages where appropriate, and individually some of them are uncommon the Lennox Henrietta (ESTC N32859) shows no examples in the UK for example. Would be useful for bibliographic analysis, or as an attractive cornerstone of an eighteenth century literature collection.
